💙🤝 Community starts with showing up. Last week, our friends at Gibson Dunn rolled up their sleeves for a day of service supporting LINC families and young readers across NYC.

Together, volunteers assembled:
🔭 360 print binoculars
📖 More than 1,000 Field Guides focused on letters, birds, and trees

These hands-on literacy tools will be used in LINC's "Play Your Way to K" workshops, helping children build early literacy skills through exploration, play, and discovery. 🌳🦉🔤

We're grateful to the Gibson Dunn team for bringing their energy, creativity, and teamwork to this project and for helping ensure more families have access to engaging literacy experiences.

Meet the runners going the distance for early literacy, one mile—and one young reader—at a time. 🏃🏻📚 We’re spotlighting our incredible Team LINC as they take on the 2026 TCS New York City Marathon to help more children discover the joy, possibility, and power of reading. 🏁👟 Next up: Nolan DiIorio!

5 Things to Know About Nolan:
1️⃣ Books have been a constant in his life, shaping how he learns, thinks, and understands the world
2️⃣ His wife is a literacy educator in Brooklyn, and he's seen firsthand how transformative it is when children discover the joy and power of reading
3️⃣ He's inspired by his wife's commitment to literacy—from building classroom libraries to tracking down books and resources for her students on weekends
4️⃣ He was drawn to LINC's mission because literacy should never be a privilege
5️⃣ A former lacrosse and basketball player, he caught the running bug during the pandemic and never looked back

👩🏽‍🏫💡 Grades matter. But they don’t always tell the whole story. Most New York City parents believe their child is at or above grade level. Yet only about 50% of NYC students are on grade level in reading and 57% in math.

Grades, test scores, classroom work, teacher feedback, and what you see at home all help create a more complete picture of a child’s progress.

🎂📚 30 YEARS OF LINC! Today, LINC turns 30. Since 1996, we've worked alongside families, caregivers, and communities to help children build the literacy skills they need to thrive in school and in life.

This year alone, LINC reached 5,177 families, impacted 17,702 children, and delivered 744 free programs and workshop sessions across New York City. 💙 What began in a handful of neighborhoods has grown into a citywide movement powered by families, community partners, educators, libraries, healthcare providers, and literacy champions who believe every child deserves a strong start.

🗣️ As our founder, Mimi Levin Lieber, said: “It’s so wonderful when you can read. It’s like all the words in the world are yours. Everything is yours. You can read everything and learn about anything.”

💙 Did you know October 8 is DAF Day? If you have a Donor Advised Fund (DAF), it's a great opportunity to support the causes you care about, including early literacy.

A DAF is a charitable giving account that allows you to set aside funds for philanthropy and recommend grants to nonprofit organizations over time. On DAF Day, donors across the country come together to put those charitable dollars to work in their communities.

Meet the runners going the distance for early literacy, one mile—and one young reader—at a time. 🏃🏻📚 We’re spotlighting our incredible Team LINC as they take on the 2026 TCS New York City Marathon to help open more doors to literacy, learning, and opportunity across NYC. 🏁👟 Next up: Connor Prior!

Things to Know About Connor:
1️⃣ A college course on educational inequality sparked his passion for early childhood literacy
2️⃣ He's inspired by LINC's work equipping caregivers with tools to create lasting community impact
3️⃣ He's been an avid reader for years and can often be found with a book on the beach during the summer
4️⃣ Before graduating from Brown, he competed as a collegiate rower, including on the international stage
5️⃣ He's taking on his first marathon after catching the running bug post-college and signing up for multiple races this year

September was all about strong starts.🍂🎒 As families headed back to school, LINC families gathered across NYC for storytimes, caregiver workshops, literacy celebrations, family festivals, and community events that made reading part of everyday life.

From bilingual read-alouds and Literacy Through Play workshops to Back-to-School events, Hispanic Heritage celebrations, Fall Celebrations, and Reading Discoveries, children and caregivers explored, learned, and grew together.

Thank you to our families, caregivers, community partners, volunteers, and supporters for helping make literacy visible and valued across our neighborhoods this month. 🫶🏽
