Local 1180 on NYC Task Force to Overhaul NYC Hiring

NYC is looking at ways to overhaul its dysfunctional, century-plus-old system for hiring workers -- and Local 1180 President Gloria Middleton has a seat at the table.

The task force is charged with proposing reforms to the city’s civil service system. The 12-person group of city officials and labor leaders will study the system and then recommend legislative changes in Albany, since the state governs the city’s system.

Joining Middleton from the labor movement are Joseph Colangelo, President of SEIU Local 246, Anthony Wells, President of SSEU Local 371, and Benny Boscio, President of the Correction Officers’ Benevolent Association.

“I am honored to serve on the Civil Service Task Force and to have the opportunity to bring the voices and experiences of our members directly to the table. The civil service system has a tremendous impact on our members’ careers, from hiring and promotions to advancement opportunities and workplace protections. As the City looks at ways to strengthen and improve that system, it is critical that the workers who navigate it every day are part of the conversation. I look forward to working with the Task Force to help identify meaningful changes that make civil service more responsive, equitable, and effective while protecting the merit-based system that public employees depend on," Middleton said.

CWA Local 1180 was proud to stand shoulder-to-shoulder with our union siblings from across New York City tonight at the NYC Central Labor Council’s 2026 Labor Day Rally & March!

Local 1180 Second Vice President Teesha Foreman served as MC for the rally, helping lead an evening that brought the labor movement together to celebrate the strength, solidarity, and power of working people.

This year’s gathering held special meaning as we approach the 25th anniversary of September 11, honoring the workers who ran toward danger that day, helped our city recover and rebuild, and sacrificed so much in the years that followed.

Union members, joined by City and State leaders, sent a powerful message: when working people stand together, our voices are stronger and our future is brighter.

Local 1180 is proud to be part of a labor movement that fights every day for dignity, fairness, respect, and a better future for all working people.

StoryCorps workers are practice picketing because we’re done waiting.

After 𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝗻 𝗲𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝗺𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗵𝘀 of bargaining, StoryCorps management still refuses to agree to fair wages and basic workplace protections like 𝐚 𝐝𝐢𝐬𝐜𝐢𝐩𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐫𝐲 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐜𝐞𝐬𝐬, 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤.

Now, management is trying to force a sudden and drastic overhaul of our timekeeping policy in the middle of negotiations — without bargaining with the Union.
Enough is enough. We’re demanding a fair contract that embodies dignity and respect.
