Shakuntala struggled to secure daily meals for her family, surviving by collecting and selling firewood. During one monsoon season, the mud house she shared with her children collapsed in the middle of the night.

Step by step, she began rebuilding her livelihood. Today, she earns an income through vegetable cultivation and backyard poultry farming. 🌱

“After our parents passed away, our childhood was filled with hardship. We even lost our sight. But when my brother and I decided to live independently, everything started to feel possible.”

Mahendra and Jaleswari faced a series of losses that would have overwhelmed many families, yet they have continued forward with remarkable resilience and determination.

Their turning point came through Trickle Up’s UPRP initiative, where the siblings began receiving structured support to strengthen their poultry enterprise and build a more stable livelihood.

Over the past year, their enterprise has helped them earn approximately INR 10,000–12,000 ($104–125 USD) while maintaining a steady flock.

Their journey reflects what becomes possible when determination is met with consistent support.

Technology is a powerful tool for opportunity for women ✨

Through Trickle Up’s MPowered project in India, in partnership with Tata Communications, women living in extreme poverty gained access to smartphones, digital coaching, and practical tools like our PoP (Package of Practice) app to strengthen livelihoods and make informed financial decisions.

The impact has been transformative:
🌱 Women used YouTube to learn new agricultural and business techniques
💰 98% of participants reported having savings, compared to 59% at baseline
📈 95% felt confident making business decisions

is about more than connectivity. It’s about building digital agency—the ability for women to use technology in ways that support their goals, businesses, and futures.

Before joining the UPRP initiative, Shakuntala Devi struggled to secure daily meals for her family, surviving by collecting and selling firewood. During one monsoon season, the mud house she shared with her children collapsed in the middle of the night.

Through the program, Shakuntala was identified as a highly vulnerable household and connected to critical support systems designed to help families in crisis. Step by step, she began rebuilding her livelihood. Today, she earns an income through vegetable cultivation, and backyard poultry farming. 🌱

Stories like Shakuntala’s remind us why partnership matters. Sustainable economic inclusion is not built in isolation—it requires collaboration with governments, local systems, and community-based programs that can connect women to the social protection and livelihood opportunities already available to them.
