So Percussion

So Percussion Sō Percussion is a quartet of musicians (and a team of excellent support members) embracing new music

This season we’ve journeyed through our epic 8-CD, 500-minute box set 25x25 (out on ) - and we are nearly at the end! This week, we’re happy to share a work composed for Sō by our own , Four + Nine - and then we have just one more to go!

Because Sō Percussion’s work is deeply collaborative and often begins with a concept rather than a well-established score, each one of us has composed new works for So over the years.

This particular piece had its germination in a section that Eric composed in 2016 for our original production A Gun Show - but then he revisited the idea for a work that he created a year later as part of the So Percussion Summer Institute.

Since that time, Four + Nine has become a Sō mainstay! Listen, and enjoy - and be sure to check out all the works on 25x25!

Executive Producers - Michael and Amanda Fournier
Engineered, edited, mixed, and mastered by Matt Poirier

From Out a Darker Sea is a project that Sō Percussion created together with members of the communities in North East England known as the Coal Coast. It was a privilege to spend time with people who had worked in the coal mines and remembered them with a mix of anguish and nostalgia. Others we worked with have grown up with much of their lives defined by shuttered mines that they have never seen open. Everyone we met welcomed us into their homes and schools and lives to learn about the history of the Coal Coast and understand what it is today.

We are grateful to Forma for helping us to make this project and to Arts Council England for supporting our commission through East Durham Creates. We could not have made this work without the collaboration of Amber Films and the incredible Sirkka-Liisa Konttinen. This work is dedicated to Billy, Fred, Harold, and Sylvia.

After premiering From Out a Darker Sea in 2016 and touring England extensively in 2017, we are happy to finally share this recording as part of our 25x25 Boxset celebrating Sō Percussion’s 25th Anniversary.

This week our own Josh Quillen got to visit his alma mater as a guest artist with the University of Akron Steel Band. Here he is with Steel Band Director Matt Dudack and Akron’s legendary percussion professor (and Sō Percussion board member) Larry Snider! (And yes- that’s Josh’s Grammy that Larry is holding in the picture).

Our epic 8-CD, 500-minute box set 25x25 is out on Cantaloupe Music - and we’re continuing to release music videos for each amazing work on the album. This week, it’s Kendall K. Williams’ Melodic Concept III.

Kendall K. Williams says:
“Melodic Concept III is the third installment of my Melodic Concept series and the first that features Steel Pan. The Melodic Concept series includes pieces that explore the melodic minor scale possibilities on various instruments. The intended experience of this particular piece is to be able to close your eyes and listen as the almost identical qualities of the four Double Seconds (Steel pans) share responsibilities over the duration of the piece. You should be able to get lost in who is playing what and find the overall movement of the piece. Slow and steady, one note at a time!”
