Adhikaar

Adhikaar, meaning rights, is the only women-led community and worker center serving and organizing the Nepali-speaking immigrant and refugee community.

We have four program areas: workers' rights, immigration rights, healthcare access and language justice Adhikaar is the only women-led worker and community center that serves and organizes the Nepali-speaking immigrant and refugee community. Adhikaar is a home away from home that
builds leadership and power to win rights and improve working conditions across low-wage industries. To achieve our mi

ssion, we
--facilitate access to information and resources on immigration, health, workers' rights, and other issues;
--organize community members to collectively advocate against social injustices and human rights abuses;
--conduct participatory research and policy advocacy on issues affecting our community;

This Month’s Chiya Charchaa: Information, Connection & Community

There is a lot happening right now, and we know many in our community are carrying questions, worries, and concerns.

This Sunday, join us for Chiya Charchaa — a space to get updates, ask questions, share what’s on our minds, and simply be together.

We’ll be joined by Razeen Zaman, Director of Immigrant Rights at Asian American Legal Defense and Education Fund (AALDEF), for updates on recent immigration and USCIS changes, Know Your Rights information, and Q&A.

We also know the devastating flooding along the Nepal–Tibet border has deeply impacted members of our community and their loved ones. We will make space to come together, share updates and concerns, and support one another during this difficult time.

Thanks to the relentless work of our casework team and our partner organizations Asian American Legal Defense and Education Fund (AALDEF), Legal Services of New Jersey and Asian American Legal Defense and Education Fund (AALDEF), Adhikaar members successfully received wages they rightfully owed.

The cases had been ongoing for nearly 10 years. Their persistence is a powerful reminder that standing up for your rights can make a difference. These victories show what’s possible when workers know their rights and communities come together to build a stronger movement for worker justice.

Adhikaar staff member Yangchen Chadotsang attended 49th Annual 2026 Women’s UALE Northeast Women’s Summer School, a week-long gathering and learning experience that brings together women leaders and organizers from across the labor movement. We are grateful to the United Association for Labor Education (UALE) and The CUNY School of Labor and Urban Studies for creating this incredible space each year for women to learn, grow, and strengthen their leadership.

Women’s leadership is essential to movement building, and opportunities like this help ensure that women’s voices, experiences, and ideas continue to shape the future of organizing and social change.

Our July Chiya Charchaa brought community members together with Sunnyside Community Services to learn about local resources, ask questions, and connect with support available in our neighborhood.

From services for older adults and families to immigrant and community resources, participants learned about ways to access support for themselves and their loved ones.
