As we reflect on this year's Commission on the Status of Women, we are struck by the existential challenges feminist civil society are facing today, and the resilience, creativity, and drive that characterize feminist approaches to building a more peaceful, just, and inclusive world. SAVE THE DATE: "Justice in Jeopardy: Countering the Authoritarian and Anti-Gender Backlash" at CSW70

Across the globe, authoritarianism and anti-gender movements pose existential threats to gender equality and women's access to justice. As rule of law suffers and civic space shrinks, women's ability to access equitable legal systems is severely compromised.
Anti-gender forces are actively dismantling protections, demonizing equality efforts, and weaponizing justice systems against civil society actors. The impact is profound and accelerating.

Join TAP Network and partners for an essential evening conversation addressing:
- The dual threats of authoritarianism and anti-gender movements
- How shrinking civic space impacts women's access to justice
- The weaponization of justice systems against rights defenders
- Strategies for defending transparency, rule of law, and independent judicial institutions
- The critical role of community-led justice when formal systems fail or are corrupted
- Protection and support for women's human rights and justice defenders on the frontlines

Join us for a CSW70 Event titled, "The Cost of Rising Militarization: Justice, Gender Equality, and Peace at Risk". As military spending soars, investment in justice and social services plummets. Join the TAP Network for a powerful panel discussion exploring: how militarization undermines gender equality, the trade-offs between weapons and justice, why sustainable peace requires justiceβ€”not force, people-centered alternatives that actually work.

As The TAP Network prepares for the 70th Session of the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW70), we're confronting the reality that women's access to justice is under unprecedented attack.

Around the world, discriminatory laws, underfunded justice systems, rising authoritarianism, and expanding anti-gender movements are rolling back rights and protections. Meanwhile, military and security spending increases while justice, equality, and social services are neglected.

At CSW70, we're advancing people-centered, feminist, and justice-based alternatives. Here are TAP Network's 4 key messages at πŸ‘‡

1️⃣ INVEST IN PEOPLE-CENTERED JUSTICE
- 5.1 BILLION people lack access to justice
- Women's justice needs are met at the community level
- We need investment in legal empowerment, community justice workers, and grassroots defendersβ€”not just formal institutions

When frontline justice is underfunded, women navigate injustice without remedy. This must change.

2️⃣ COUNTER THE AUTHORITARIAN & ANTI-GENDER BACKLASH
- Only 7% of people live in countries with free civic space
- Authoritarianism + anti-gender movements = existential threats to justice
- We must defend rule of law, transparency, and independent courts and protect women's human rights and justice defenders

As civic space shrinks, justice systems are weaponized against civil society. We're fighting back.

3️⃣ INVEST IN PEACE, NOT MILITARISM
- Rising military spending diverts resources from justice & peacebuilding
- Justice is central to sustainable peaceβ€”especially for women in conflict
- Sustainable peace is built through justice, inclusion & trustβ€”NOT force

We're calling for governments to rebalance spending for sustainable peace & development.

4️⃣ FUND FEMINIST MOVEMENTS
- Feminist movements drive legal & policy change
- They challenge power structures even amid backlash
- Yet they remain severely underfunded

Governments: Listen to feminist movements. FUND feminist movements. They're leading the resistance and creating solutions.

Dear TAP Colleagues,

It is with a heavy heart and profound shock that we share the sad news of the passing of TAP’s Steering Committee co-chair, and Founder and Executive Director of Women for Peace and Gender Equality Initiative(WOPEGEE) in Nigeria, Dr. Mojisola Akinsanya. We are devastated to lose such a close colleague, partner and friend such as Mojisola, but count ourselves as lucky to have been blessed to have the opportunity to work alongside her, and witnessing her unwavering commitment to our shared mission, and to the communities that she led and served.

Mojisola was an indispensable leader for the TAP Network, having represented the network at several key moments these past two years, and provided immeasurable support for TAP’s work as our co-chair. Mojisola had a deep personal impact on all who had the privilege of knowing her, or working with her – with her passion and expertise for the issues she worked on, and her dedication to the networks and communities she engaged with shining through in everything she did. However, she will perhaps be remembered best as a genuine, bright and empathetic person with a warm and kind heart, who led her personal and professional life with humility, integrity and resolve.

For those that would like to send your condolences, thoughts, kind words, prayers or share memories of your work or time with Mojisola, you can find a remembrance platform to show your solidarity and support here: https://www.forevermissed.com/mojisola-florence-akinsanya

She will be dearly missed by all of us, and on behalf of the TAP Secretariat and Steering Committee, we offer our heartfelt condolences to Mojisola’s family, friends and partners during this sad and difficult time.

Yours in solidarity,

The TAP Secretariat and Steering Committee
