Community saves lives. LGBTQ+ youth continue to face significantly higher rates of su***de risk, reminding us how vital acceptance, affirmation, and connection truly are.

June invites us to highlight our celebrations of LGBTQIA+ community members, but our reach is needed on a daily basis. If you want to dive deeper into local and national resources, here are a few places to start:

Part of normalizing grief is understanding that you are not responsible for making other people comfortable with your pain. If someone gets awkward when you mention your person, changes the subject, or clearly wishes you would β€œmove on,” that belongs to them. You do not need to edit yourself down into something easier for others to handle.

You do not owe anyone a fake β€œI’m fine.” If you are doing ok that day, say that. But if you are struggling, you are allowed to answer honestly too. β€œToday’s hard.” β€œI’m getting through it.” β€œSome moments are better than others.” Those are real answers. Grief does not disappear on a timeline just because the rest of the world has become uncomfortable with it.

And you are also allowed to protect yourself by not talking about it at all. Grief is deeply personal. You get to decide who hears your story and who does not. You get to choose when you have the energy to explain and when you do not. That is not selfish. That is survival after loss.

If you have been shrinking your grief down so other people can stay comfortable, I hope you stop doing that. Your loss mattered. Your love mattered. And your grief does not need to be polished up and made acceptable for public viewing in order to deserve compassion.
