Project Linus of the Greater Twin Cities Area, Minnesota

Project Linus of the Greater Twin Cities Area, Minnesota The Greater Twin Cities Area, MN chapter of Project Linus provides hand-made hugs to the seriously ill or traumatized children in the Mpls/St. Paul area.

On Christmas Eve, 1995, an article titled “Joy to the World” appeared in Parade Magazine. It was written by Pulitzer Prize winning photo-journalist, Eddie Adams. Part of the article featured a petite, downy haired child named Laura:
“Laura has unusual compassion for others,” Charlotte Barry-Williams of Oceanside, California, says of her daughter, who was diagnosed with leukemia in 1993. “I guess

part of the reason is that she has experienced so much pain herself.”

A special “blankie” has helped Laura, 3, get through more than two years of intensive chemotherapy. She takes it to the hospital with her when she goes for treatment. When she was first diagnosed, 97 percent of her bone marrow contained cancerous cells. Although chemotherapy has helped eradicate the cancer, she has had to endure nausea, high fevers and the loss of her hair. An allergic reaction at one point caused her to lose vital signs.

“She doesn’t understand what cancer means,” her mother says. “She’s a very joyous and happy person, very curious.” Her mother hopes Laura can start preschool next spring. After reading the article, Karen Loucks decided to provide homemade security blankets to Denver's Rocky Mountain Children's Cancer Center, and Project Linus was born.

We had a couple of work shops this past week. Doesn’t happen often, but with the holiday, and church activities we are happy to be flexible.
Here are some photos.

Request for twin size

I recently met a woman who is a member of Vadnais Hts. Lions club.
If you’re not familiar with this Int’l. organization, you can check it out, they do amazing community service work.

Any way, they are partnering with Sleep in Heavenly Peace. SHP makes and provides beds to children who do not have one. (SHPbeds.org) She is trying to get commitments from quilters to be able to provide 70 Twin Size quilts to go along with the beds. They would like the quilts by Labor Day.

I’d like to say we can help them. I know with spring/summer, some may not be sewing/quilting as much. But if you’d like to bust thru some of your fabric stash, and help with this special project, it would be greatly appreciated.

They’d like the size to be 60 x 80.

They are to be completed quilts. If you wish to help with this please let me know.
Email: [email protected].

Let me know if you’re interested, or have any questions.

FYI-she is asking other quilting groups, so we are not the only supplier for this project.

We are a group of volunteers dedicated to building, assembling and delivering top-notch beds to children and families in need.

Just a reminder-blankets of all types should be made in a smoke free home/area. We just made a pick up of 2 large bags that have a strong smoke smell. Don’t know if laundering them will do the trick, but will give it a try.

Happy New Year!

We ended up 2025 with a bang! For the 4th Qtr. we distributed 1,458 blankets!! This gets us close to our previous normal of about 1,500 per qtr. (6,000 annual). (Pre JoAnns closing)
Our total for 2025 was 4,874. And our total since the beginning of our chapter, 2006, is 104,857!
A big Thank You to all of you, our great volunteers and blanket makers!
Here’s to a GREAT2026! 🎉

Just want to share, and say “Thank You” to all who make blankets to help us meet our mission.

Just want to let you know that we were visited by Twin Cities Live yesterday at our Plymouth workshop!
Kristin Haubrich, reporter, had reached out a couple of weeks ago. They did their filming, and it was a great experience.
The segment will air Monday 11/17, at 3:00 pm, on ABC channel 5.
