On April 23, more than 50 chiefs from across Minnesota gathered at the State Capitol for MCPA’s Day at the Capitol, connecting directly with legislators and public safety leaders during a pivotal week in the legislative session.

The program featured remarks and discussion with Minnesota Department of Public Safety Commissioner Bob Jacobson and various legislative leaders. Discussions focused on key public safety priorities and legislation moving through the Capitol.

Notably, the event took place on the same day the Minnesota House unanimously passed legislation strengthening penalties for impersonating a peace officer.

Thank you to the MCPA Legislative Committee for their leadership and engagement throughout the session, to the many legislators and public safety partners who continue to support law enforcement across Minnesota, and to Cozen O’Connor for their continued work on behalf of MCPA.

During National Police Week, we pause to recognize and honor the law enforcement officers who serve across Minnesota and the nation.

This week is an opportunity to express gratitude to those who serve with professionalism, courage, and commitment. Peace Officers Memorial Day on May 15 serves as a solemn reminder of the officers who gave their lives in service to others.

We extend our appreciation to all members of law enforcement and thank them for their service and dedication to keeping our communities strong and safe.

Last week in St. Cloud, more than 400 law enforcement leaders from across Minnesota came together for MCPA's Executive Training Institute (ETI).

The four-day conference featured impactful sessions, including Lt. Brian Murphy's firsthand account of the Sikh Temple shooting and leadership insights from Motorola Solutions CEO Greg Brown. Attendees also engaged in discussions on targeted violence response, officer wellness, complex investigations, and key policy issues.

The Expo Hall brought together more than 100 vendors and partners, showcasing tools and technology supporting agencies statewide. The week also included networking opportunities, breakout sessions, and the MCPA Awards Ceremony, recognizing officers and personnel who went above and beyond the call of duty.

Thank you to our ETI Committee, speakers, sponsors, and exhibitors for helping make this year's conference a success.

Today we recognize and thank the dedicated women and men who serve our communities as law enforcement officers.

Across Minnesota and throughout the country, officers show up every day to protect, respond, and serve, often under difficult and unpredictable circumstances. Their commitment to public safety, professionalism, and community engagement does not go unnoticed.

On National Law Enforcement Appreciation Day, we thank all officers for the work they do and the communities they serve.

KARE 11 spoke with MCPA Executive Director Jeff Potts about the role of local law enforcement during ICE operations.

Director Potts noted that Minnesota police departments do not enforce immigration law and are not involved in making immigration-related arrests. Their focus remains on keeping communities safe and preventing any escalation of violence.

The executive director of the Minnesota Chiefs of Police Association says they cannot enforce immigration law, but have a role in keeping the peace.

As many have been asking how to help, a GoFundMe has been set up for Officer Zajac's family at https://gofund.me/b041fdf7c.

Farmington community,

I’m writing to share some tragic and sad news. Late last night, Officer Pete Zajac took his life. Officer Zajac was a well-respected fifteen-year veteran of the Farmington Police Department, and is survived by his wife and three children. Officer Zajac spent the past two years serving as the School Resource Officer within the Farmington school district. Our entire police department family is in mourning and our hearts go out to his entire family. His presence within our department and our community as a whole will be missed. A sincere thank you to our law enforcement partners, and those in the community who have surrounded us in our time of need and those that will support us in the tough times ahead.
