Familiar faces like Perla’s make every CSI trip to Hermosillo extra special.

Now 29, Perla graduated from cleft care years ago and works in the cafeteria at Hospital CIMA Hermosillo. CSI performed all but her first cleft surgery, and our volunteers feel privileged to have been part of her journey.

Perla visits our team every year, and seeing her is a highlight for those who return to Hermosillo. These annual visits are a lovely reminder that the connections made through CSI last long after care ends.

This might be the story of the week.

Dr. Grischkan’s last patient of this trip was also his very first CSI patient — 15 years ago, on his first CSI trip in 2011.

Angel Enrique was just 9 months old when Dr. Grischkan performed his cleft lip and palate surgeries. Today, Jon performed Angel’s rhinoplasty.

Angel’s mom, Fatima, remembered Dr. Grischkan from 2011, telling him “I am so very happy that this day has come. It seemed so far away, back in 2011 and Angel was a baby, and now the day is actually here where he doesn’t need any more surgeries.”

And what a way to end the trip!

That's a wrap - the 2026 Hermosillo, Mexico trip is complete. Thanks to this special collaboration with St. Andrew's Children's Clinic, Hospital CIMA Hermosillo and Voluntariado CIMA our amazing surgical volunteer team was able to complete a whopping 82 procedures for 64 young people. BRAVO Team!

When 16-year-old Alan woke up from surgery yesterday, the first thing he asked for was a mirror.

Drs. Fritz and Patel had just completed his rhinoplasty and lip revision. When Alan saw his reflection, he started to cry, saying to his PACU nurse, “I’m just so happy.”

For our volunteers, moments like this are why they give their time and talent. ❤

8 patients are undergoing rhinoplasty surgery today, with each surgery lasting approximately 4 hours.

It's day 3 of surgeries! 17 surgeries are on today’s schedule and behind every one is a team making sure each child is safely cared for every step of the way.

In post-op, Drs. Paul Melchert and Roxanna Lefort, along with PACU nurses Melissa, Sean and Cindy, monitor vital signs, manage pain and side effects, and guide guide parents through those first feeds after surgery — an important and necessary milestone.

About 30–60 minutes later, most children move to their recovery rooms for the night. The pediatricians and surgeons will continue to round on them through discharge the following day.

When 9-year-old Alexia came into pre-op, she was nervous about bone graft surgery but determined to ask Dr. Sampson one very special question: would he please pierce her ears while she was under anesthesia?

Alexia had wanted her ears pierced for a long time, but was too scared to have it done. She had even brought earrings with her, just in case Dr. Sampson said yes.

He did. And the excitement on Alexia’s face when she got her answer was pretty hard to miss.

This was a first for Dr. Sampson — and after Alexia woke up in post-op, the very first thing she did was reach up and touch her earlobes.

These little stuffed animals have been bringing so much comfort and joy.

Thanks to a print grant from 4imprint, every child receiving surgery this week is receiving a stuffed animal to keep close.

And they’re a hit. When we rounded on yesterday’s patients this morning, many were still holding theirs in their arms.

Thank you, 4imprint , for helping make this week a little brighter for our patients!
