Walk Bike Nashville

Walk Bike Nashville Walk Bike Nashville is working to build a more walkable, bikeable, and livable Nashville.

WE ENVISION A NASHVILLE IN WHICH:
➡️All people, regardless of race, class, or income, have the freedom to move through a comprehensive network of safe and accessible sidewalks, bikeways and transit routes with dignity,
➡️ Our transportation investments are co-created by those who have most at stake;
There are zero transportation deaths and serious injuries;
➡️There is a culture of walking and bic

ycling;
➡️People are healthier and happier because of equitable transportation choices;
➡️Our natural resources are protected by our transportation choices. OUR STRATEGIC GOALS
➡️Safer Streets
No one should be killed or seriously injured by our transportation system. We will advocate for policies and infrastructure that reduce serious and fatal bicycle and pedestrian crashes.
➡️Dignified Infrastructure for all. Nashville needs a safe and inviting network of bikeways and pedestrian infrastructure to ensure all Nashvillians are able to get around without a car, regardless of age, ability, culture, race, or income.
➡️Build the Walking Biking Culture
Build a culture where we accept and embrace many forms of transportation, where we celebrate active transportation trips. We will provide programs that help more Nashvillians use active transportation, and support those already doing so.
➡️Transportation Justice
The history of our transportation system has harmed many including Black, indigenous, communities of color, low-income communities, and people with disabilities, and mobility continues to be a barrier for many. We will work to counter this systemic inequity within our transportation system and to make Walk Bike Nashville into an anti-racist organization.
➡️Strong Walk Bike Nashville: Walk Bike Nashville will continue to be a stable, diverse, and successful organization so that we can achieve our goals. OUR VALUES
➡️Community
Our work should reflect and respect the needs and differences of the communities of Nashville in which we work.
➡️ Inclusion
We want to be intentionally inclusive in building a community
➡️Grassroots
We believe in the power of the people to change their community and work to be civic enablers, while always respecting our elected and appointed city leaders
➡️Powered by our People
Members and volunteers are a critical part of our success.
➡️Transportation Equity
We believe transportation investments should remove barriers to mobility and prioritize the needs of Black, Indigenous, people of color (BIPOC), and low-income people who stand to gain the most from better service.
➡️Environmental Sustainability
We believe our actions should be sustainable and respect our environment.
➡️Vanguards
We are innovative and forward-looking, willing to make mistakes
➡️Insistent but optimistic
We are respectful, but assertive when we need to be. We are passionate and believe in the potential for positive change, while also acknowledging the extent of our transportation challenges.
➡️Reflective and Data-Driven
We intentionally pursue personal excellence through positive self-criticism. We seek to be subject matter experts and use data backed by personal narratives or experiences from those who have the most at stake.

Our annual State of Our Streets report outlines steps that will make our vision for people-first streets a reality. Read it today at walkbikenashville.org/streetsreport.

This year’s report provides updates on recommendations from our inaugural 2025 report as well as new ideas for how to carry on the momentum. We have further insights on how our transportation network is working today, particularly from a walkability, bikeability, and safety perspective, and we have updates on programs that have launched over the past 12 months. The report is both a guidemap for policymakers and a tool safe street advocates can use to inform their efforts toward long-lasting, meaningful change across the city and in their own neighborhoods.

Our work has had an impact. One year after our original report, we’ve seen tangible progress on four of our six State of Our Streets recommendations:
-The Nashville Department of Transportation and Multimodal Infrastructure (NDOT) is better equipped to build safe walking paths after adding sidewalk alternatives to its Neighborhood Street Traffic Calming Toolkit.
-Nashville’s 2026 Vision Zero budget included a line item for quick-build construction projects, which can improve safety on dangerous roads.
-Nashvillians spoke up in support of a people-first, four-lane design for East Bank Boulevard, and project leaders have moved away from a dangerous six-lane design for Nashville’s next great street.
-People in Downtown Nashville got a preview of improved biking infrastructure thanks to a pilot project in summer 2026 featuring concrete-protected “Toronto Barrier” bike lanes. This infrastructure should feature in the city’s Phase 1 Downtown Mobility Lanes, slated for construction in 2027.

Now is the time to set a strong foundation for our transportation future. Read the report and join us in this movement. Together, we can build a better Nashville for all.

Celebrate Walk Month with Walk to School Day on October 7! Walk to School Day is a chance for us to promote healthy habits, foster family and community support, and bring attention to the safety concerns of neighborhoods so that children have safe routes to school.

We had over 60 schools participate in 2025, with thousands of students, parents, and community members participating. We are so excited to see everyone walking to school again!

Visit walkbikenashville.org/walktoschoolday for more information and to register. Each school that registers before September 15 will receive:

🚶 “I Walked to School Today” stickers for student participants
🏳️ A school banner (if your school doesn’t already have one)
📕 Digital event manual with tips and best practices
👕 T-shirts for the administrators of the event
ℹ️ Support with event organization questions

We’re thrilled to celebrate the Walk to School Day with you and your students! Thank you for being a part of this tradition.

Timothy Wedlock lost his life while walking downtown Saturday afternoon. Others were injured. This is not simply a statistic or a headline. A human life was lost, and loved ones will carry that absence long after public attention fades.

We are deeply saddened that this visitor to our city, along with 22 other individuals this year, died while walking in Nashville. Countless others have been injured. Most of these tragedies received little or no media attention, but their lives, their loved ones, and the profound losses experienced by their communities matter just as much.

While we await details of Saturday’s crash, we already know the larger truth: Traffic violence is a preventable public health crisis. In this moment, we must ask whether our priorities, pace, and actions reflect the true urgency of the crisis.

We cannot accept preventable crashes as the status quo. Nashville now has more funding, stronger public support, and a greater opportunity to build safer streets than ever before. This moment requires bold leadership, coordinated action, immediate safety interventions, and sustained long-term investment. We’re encouraged that members of our local government have shown their awareness of this urgent problem, and now we call on them to act.

As we mourn with the families of these victims, we ask every Nashvillian to refuse to accept the loss of any life as normal. We call on our local and state leaders and public agencies to partner with us to respond with the urgency, empathy, courage, and accountability this crisis requires.

Another path is possible. Together, we must choose it.

Our Bike Valet service helps promote car-free transportation to events across Nashville, from Nashville SC and Tennessee Titans gamedays to community festivals to concerts. It’s one of our most visible programs throughout the city, and you could help us take it to the next level as our Bike Valet Coordinator.

The Bike Valet Coordinator will ensure the ex*****on of a successful Bike Valet service at events throughout our city. This includes coordinating a team of contractors (Gear Shifters) and volunteers, overseeing logistics of bike valet service, and providing excellent customer service. This role is public facing and has administrative tasks that require remote work.

Thank you for a wonderful summer of Open Streets, Nashville! We’re still buzzing from our last event on July 11 — not to mention the successful, joyful days downtown in May and June.

Nashvillians loved it, too: Our post-event survey found that the vast majority of attendees felt safer or much safer during the Open Street compared to other times they walk or bike downtown, and a similar amount would come downtown if it was safer and easier to walk or bike.

Read more from Open Streets Assistant Manager Calah Gipson at walkbikenashville.org/blog. Once you make it to the end of the blog, you'll find out how to host an Open Street in your neighborhood!
