People who are unhoused experience barriers to accessing higher levels of care, including skilled nursing facilities, despite often needing this level of health care and support. Medical respite care programs are unable to safely serve clients who have skilled nursing care level needs, resulting in gaps in care and worse outcomes for those who need this level of care. In response to this challenge, many communities have established partnerships and pathways to address this gap and increase access to appropriate levels of care.

We've partnered with CommonSpirit to assess current practices for developing pathways and access to care, and to develop promising practices and recommendations that can be applied across communities. There is a growing need for more focused work at the intersection of health care, homelessness, and youth engagement. While many resources exist on youth engagement more broadly, far fewer address how to authentically engage youth leaders within health care spaces. Our new resource guide, "Elevating Youth Voice," is one step toward naming and beginning to address that gap.

Weather emergencies hit differently when you live outside. Yet unhoused people are frequently excluded from community disaster planning efforts.

The 2026 Consumer Participation Outreach Survey, conducted by work groups formed within the National Consumer Advisory Board (a membership network of NHCHC), gathered input directly from individuals who are unhoused about what they consider essential to understanding their needs and challenges during extreme weather.

Since 2005, NCAB has led this community-based survey to better understand what is working well and what improvements are needed in homeless health care. The CPO survey is both designed and carried out by leaders with lived experience of homelessness.

The 2026 survey asked 122 people experiencing homelessness in Boston, Cincinnati, and Denver how health centers can better support them before, during, and after weather emergencies. Nearly all respondents reported experiencing extreme cold, and their responses point to the importance of shelter, warm clothing and supplies, and timely, reliable communication about weather alerts.

General election season is practically here! How much do you know about the people looking to represent you and your community? How will they make health care and housing more accessible to low-income people? How will they address homelessness?

We've compiled three important questions to ask candidates running for federal, state, and local elections, so you can think critically about who to support. Check out A Closer Look, our policy blog, for more: https://nhchc.org/ask-political-candidates-these-three-questions/
