Creativets To empower wounded veterans to heal through the arts and music

CreatiVets’ mission is to provide combat disabled veterans with the opportunity to use art, music, and creative writing to address the psychological and emotional needs that arise from combat-related trauma. Our goal is to empower veterans suffering from post-traumatic stress and traumatic brain injury with tools they can use for the rest of their lives to combat stress, depression and other side effects of war.

“If it helped me, it could probably help a lot of other people.”
Before CreatiVets, there was a Marine trying to find his way forward. Art and music helped our co-founder, Richard Casper, share his story, honor a friend he lost in combat, and begin to feel like himself again.

That experience became the reason to help other veterans find their own way to create. No art background. No music experience. Just a place to start, and people who understand.

Today, we’re celebrating Navy veteran and corpsman Shaun Bott, who co-wrote “They Call Me Doc” through CreatiVets. Featuring Aaron Lewis, Vince Gill, and Dan Tyminski, the song honors the “Docs” who have cared for others across generations.

Every veteran has a story. Through music and art, we help them find a way to share it. Shaun, thank you for your service and for helping others feel heard through your song.

CreatiVets is proud to partner with Ascend Amphitheater for Community Day—a FREE, all-ages Veterans Day celebration honoring those who served and the families beside them.

Join us for live entertainment, community partner booths, fitness challenges, animal rescues, and more!

Our October songwriting cohort starts today in Nashville! 🎶
From October 6–9, veterans will work with professional songwriters and veteran mentors to turn their experiences into original songs and connect with others who understand their journey.

Thank you to Creative Forces for helping make this week possible and giving veterans another way to share their stories through music.

This songwriting cohort is funded in part by Creative Forces®: NEA Military Healing Arts Network, an initiative of the National Endowment for the Arts in partnership with the U.S. Departments of Defense and Veterans Affairs. Scars to Scripts connects veterans with professional storytellers to develop original scripts inspired by their experiences—creating another way to express what they’ve lived through and help others understand.

This workshop moment in Los Angeles captures the conversations behind that process: sharing ideas, listening to one another, and finding room for laughter along the way.

Every veteran brings a different perspective to the table. Together, we help those stories take shape.

From letters to lyrics to movement—veterans’ stories took center stage. 🇺🇸

For Scars to Scripts in 2025, we partnered with Exit12 Dance Company to choreograph a performance set to “We Are America.”

Written by our Executive Director Richard Casper alongside Johnny and Heidi, the song draws from letters written by veterans who lived through 9/11 and then chose to serve their country. Their words became music, and through Exit12’s choreography, those stories found another way to be felt.

That’s the power of creative expression. A letter, a song, a dance—each offers a way to share experiences that can be difficult to put into words alone, and an opportunity for the rest of us to listen.

A new perspective starts with looking up. ✨🌌

Huge thanks to Fujifilm X Series US and Benro for partnering with CreatiVets for our recent astrophotography cohort at McDonald Observatory, helping veterans explore creativity through the lens of a camera.

Capturing the night sky takes more than pointing up and pressing the shutter. A capable camera with strong low-light performance and manual controls helps reveal faint stars and details our eyes can miss. A sturdy tripod keeps that camera still during long exposures, allowing it to gather light without camera shake blurring the image. 📸

With FUJIFILM cameras and Benro tripods, our veterans had the tools to slow down, try something new, and capture something extraordinary.

Thank you to McDonald Observatory for hosting us and protecting the dark skies that make these experiences possible. And to our partners: thank you for supporting opportunities for veterans to connect and create. 💛
