Parents often think of the pediatrician’s office as the place to talk about physical health. It can be much more than that.

Last year, 1,300 patients received critical behavioral health services in the same pediatric setting where they were already receiving care.

When behavioral healthcare is integrated into pediatric care, concerns can be identified earlier and families can access support in a setting they already know and trust.

Share this to help raise awareness that behavioral concerns can and should be part of pediatric care.

Most mental illnesses do not begin in adulthood. They begin much earlier, which makes early identification and support far more urgent than many people realize.

Seventy-five percent begin before age 18 and half begin by age 14.
Early support can change the trajectory for children and families.

Behavioral healthcare is not only about responding to visible problems. It is also about identifying concerns earlier, supporting families sooner and making care more accessible.

In 2024, NCF invested to expand access to pediatric mental healthcare across primary care providers and clinics serving vulnerable children and families through Nicklaus Children’s Hospital’s Behavioral Health and Wellness Program.

As this integrated care model grows, it can reach a broader population of children and families by making behavioral health support part of the care they are already receiving.

With screenings, assessments, counseling and parent and caregiver education, the program helps strengthen early support and coordination.

After suddenly becoming the sole caregiver of his two young daughters, Jose found himself navigating housing instability, food insecurity and barriers to accessing support as a single father in Immokalee. What followed was a remarkable example of what can happen when nonprofits and community organizations work together around a family in need.

Through support from Naples Children Foundation; Meals of Hope, Guadalupe Center, NCH Healthcare System and ABLE Academy's STAR Initiative came together to ensure Jose and his daughters gained access to food deliveries, diapers, childcare, healthcare coordination, behavioral health services and eventually a safe apartment where the girls now have a room of their own.

This family’s story is a reminder that access improves when care is designed around real life. When multiple services are easier to reach and built around family needs, support becomes more practical, more timely and more effective.

The true test of any access model is simple: Are families actually using it?

Since 2024, NCF’s Pediatric Health Center in Immokalee has served 3,500 families through a coordinated model designed to reduce barriers and connect families to care closer to home.

This is what access looks like when systems are built around real community needs.

In Immokalee, poverty, transportation challenges and limited awareness can make critical care harder to reach for the children and families who need it most.

The overall poverty rate is 43.3%.

When those barriers stack up, families can face major challenges in reaching the care their children need. Bringing services closer to home is part of how access becomes possible.

In a community where local access to care is limited, bringing more services together in one place can make a meaningful difference for families.

In 2024, NCF took over operations of a renovated 3,600-square-foot facility in Immokalee that expands what is available locally by bringing multiple pediatric and family support services under one roof.

Dental care, vision care, behavioral health and food support are already part of the model, and occupational therapy, physical therapy and speech therapy services are expected to begin in Fall 2026.

With services available in English, Spanish and Haitian Creole, the model is designed to reduce barriers and make care more accessible for local families.
