Jacob Diaz

Field Technician

Jacob was born and raised in Southern California, where recreating the outdoors sparked his lifelong passion for the environment. He earned his bachelor’s degree from California State University Monterey Bay, and built a solid foundation in public land management through environmental internships with the United States Forest Service (USFS) and the Bureau of Land Management (BLM).

His professional expertise centers on land management and data collection, particularly utilizing Geographic Information Systems (GIS) for field mapping. Jacob aims to integrate advanced geospatial software into land management practices, leveraging data-driven insights to help stewards successfully navigate complex land use decisions.

Rebeckah Rubanowitz

Project Manager

Rebeckah was born in Redding, CA and raised spending summers on a family cattle ranch in North Dakota. She has been working in agriculture ever since. Her primary passion is agroecology, graduating from UC Berkeley with a bachelor’s degree in Plant and Microbial Biology. Coming from a farming background, she is excited to engage with and learn from growers about the good work they do to steward their land.

As a Stewardship Field Technician, Rebeckah interfaces with growers undertaking the Fish Friendly Farming certification program, working to support them in meeting their ecological and sustainability goals.

Natalie Reed

Project Manager

Natalie grew up in the East Bay, received a B.S. in Conservation and Resource Studies from U.C. Berkeley, and then headed north to explore systems of land stewardship. She has worked on lands throughout the north coast, and has completed post-baccalaureate studies in sociology, rangeland management, and fire science. She is interested primarily in long-term, landscape-scale stewardship. Natalie’s work is focused on forest and grassland systems, fire
resilience, watershed health, and collaborative action. She has lived with and learned from many land-based communities, and is now happily based in western Sonoma County.

Natalie is passionate about all things related to land and community stewardship, and particularly loves working with prescribed fire, grazing animals, and neighbors of all kinds.

Are you prepared for fire season?

Protecting buildings during wildfires relies largely on reducing vegetation around structures, a strategy known as DEFENSIBLE SPACE. This approach has been integrated into wildfire resilience planning for homes in wildland urban interfaces (WUIs) and can also be applied to buildings located in and around vineyards and wildlands.

Defensible space is organized into concentric vegetation zones, with progressively less flammable vegetation planted nearer to the structure.

CLSI has been invited to submit a full proposal for the California Department of Food and Agriculture's (CDFA) Block Grant Recipient (BGR) program in support of the Healthy Soils Program (HSP) and State Water Efficiency and Enhancement Program (SWEEP).

To strengthen our proposal, we are seeking letters of support from growers in our network who are interested in applying for these grants and/or have previously received HSP or SWEEP funding.
