The Hackley and Hume Historic Site preserves the homes of Muskegon's most well-known lumber barons

The Hackley and Hume Historic Site tells the story of two men who used their business educations, work experiences, and natural talents to take advantage of lumbering opportunities in Muskegon and build vast fortunes. They not only worked together, but built homes on the same piece of land. The homes feature many original stained glass windows, exquisite wood carving, and period furnishings.

This Saturday marks the end of the 2026 touring season at the Muskegon Historic Sites and the final day for Muskegon County residents to enjoy FREE admission to the Hackley and Hume Historic Site, Fire Barn Museum, and Scolnik House of the Depression Era.

Fury of the Flames!

October 8-10, 1871: Fire ravaged Chicago. It was reported that nearly 3,000 acres were consumed by the hungry inferno, leaving thousands destitute and homeless.

Chicago did not rest long on her smoldering ashes. Schooners loaded with lumber sailed eagerly from Muskegon to rebuild the “windy city.” With 47 sawmills surrounding it, Muskegon’s deep harbor was ideal for shipping goods to Chicago by lake.

Years later, in 1887, Muskegon earned the nickname "Lumber Queen of the World" after producing 665 million board feet of lumber in a single season.

“The possession of the living, the heritage of posterity!” library chairman Robert Bunker exclaimed to a large audience on October 15, 1890. Foreboding weather did not deter hundreds from flooding into Muskegon’s Opera House for Hackley Public Library’s dedication ceremony.

This special occasion marked the day Hackley Public Library officially opened its doors to feed the hungry, inquisitive minds of Muskegon’s residents.

Charles H. Hackley donated over $125,000 to build and furnish this handsome granite structure, with the caveat that it would remain a public library forever. This beloved library was his first gift to Muskegon. His pure benevolence continues to serve and be enjoyed by Muskegonites 136 years later.
