If you've done MiCorps' VSMP stream monitoring, you already know how to sort a sample into the major groups: mayflies, stoneflies, caddisflies, and the rest. One of this year's optional pre-conference activities is a chance to get to know some of those groups more closely.

"Advanced Macroinvertebrate Identification: Beyond the Order Level" is a hands-on workshop focused on mayflies and stoneflies, two of the most pollution-sensitive groups and some of the most useful for judging water quality.

Order-level identification is the backbone of volunteer stream monitoring, and it gives a real, reliable picture of a stream's health. This workshop is for anyone who wants to go a layer deeper and start telling apart the different families within those groups. It's a satisfying skill if you find this work interesting, and a good way to sharpen your eye for the animals you're already pulling out of the net.

The session is led by Dr. Paul Steen, MiCorps' Stream Program Manager, and Tamara Lipsey, the EGLE MiCorps Lead, who lead the state's volunteer stream monitoring work.

It runs 1:00 to 5:00 p.m. on Thursday, November 5, as part of the optional pre-conference activities, and it's included with registration.

Thank you to Reeths-Puffer Middle School's 7th grade teachers and students for inviting community partners to share real-world perspectives on soil, erosion, plants, pollinators, wildlife, and water in Muskegon County. The student groups identified a focus problem and proposed solutions, either an "intervention" or an "education" project, aimed at addressing that problem and supporting West Michigan's natural resources.
