Today’s featured bird friend can be found in northern coniferous forests and mixed woodlands and loves to dart around backyard bird feeders, quickly taking seeds back to trees to stash or eat. This tiny, fearless ball of energy is the red-breasted nuthatch! 🌰🧡
These birds love to join waves of other birds like chickadees, titmice, kinglets and warblers as they forage through forests. Be sure to listen for their adorable tooting call!
Fun fact - the word “nuthatch” is likely derived from the old English word “nuthack,” which refers to the habit of hacking at a seed or nut until it opens.
Red-breasted nuthatches are year-round residents in Michigan, including winter when they may need to travel farther south for food. With fall right around the corner, be sure to keep an eye out for these little ones!
