📚 Looking for a clearer picture of your child’s reading and spelling skills?

The University of Utah Reading Clinic (UURC) offers online assessments to help parents better understand their child’s reading and spelling performance.

The assessment report can also be shared with teachers, counselors, and psychologists to provide a more complete picture of your child’s strengths and areas for growth.

Please note: This assessment does not diagnose dyslexia.

The assessment is a prerequisite for UURC tutoring services for students who demonstrate a need for additional support.

This fall, our Reading Clinic specialists Rachelle Packer, Shamae Sabin, and Wendy Wittwer have led the first three in-person trainings for preservice educators in EDU 5316/6316.

Through this one-credit practicum, taken alongside Reading Methods, students receive hands-on training before working one-on-one with developing readers—virtually and in Salt Lake City-area schools. Along the way, they receive ongoing coaching and observations from our staff as they build their skills and confidence as educators.

The University of Utah is one of a small number of universities that embed a mentored reading practicum directly into teacher preparation coursework—connecting future teachers with real learners from the start.

We’re training tomorrow’s reading educators. 📚

Meet Beckam, a recent U of U Reading Clinic graduate! ❤️

After working with the clinic, he shared that he understands language much better and is getting ahead in his class. Every reader’s path is different, and the UURC is here to help families understand their child’s reading needs and find the right support.

Our clinic recently completed its first official site visit with Daggett School District, our rural partner in the EIR project!

During the visit, UURC specialists met with district and school leaders to discuss project goals, implementation plans, and local literacy needs. Together, we’re working to provide evidence-based reading support for striving readers in grades 4–12 through trained university interns and students, supported by Reading Clinic specialists.

Backed by a $7.1 million grant, this project is helping expand access to structured reading support and improve reading outcomes for students across Utah.

We’re excited to strengthen this partnership and work alongside Daggett School District to support students and build long-term literacy success. 📖

Building strong readers starts at home. 📚💙

Last month, Dr. Kelly Patrick, Director of the University of Utah Reading Clinic, joined Friends of the Children-Utah in Kearns for a Partners in Parenting family engagement event.

Her presentation, Growing Readers at Home, shared practical, research-based strategies caregivers can use every day to support early literacy — from talking and storytelling to singing, playing, and reading together.

The event also brought together UURC and Friends of the Children-Utah to explore opportunities for continued collaboration in family literacy, caregiver education, literacy camps, and tutoring and assessment support.

We’re grateful for opportunities to connect with families and partners who share a commitment to helping children build strong literacy skills.

37 educators. One shared goal: stronger literacy instruction. 📚

From September 1–3, the University of Utah Reading Clinic welcomed educators from across Utah for an introductory course in the Wilson Reading System®, the Tier 3 instruction provided through the Clinic.

The Wilson Reading System® is an explicit, cumulative, sequential, and diagnostic approach. Students hear, say, tap, manipulate, read, and write sounds and words, with instruction individualized based on their performance.

We’re proud to support educators with evidence-based tools they can bring back to their classrooms and students. 👏

- This course is a prerequisite for the Wilson Level 1 certification practicum which grants educators the Certified Dyslexia Practitioner from the International Dyslexia Association.

What happens when educators have the tools and support to strengthen literacy instruction in their classrooms?

Dani, an alternative high school teacher, earned her Secondary Literacy Interventionist Endorsement (SLI)
by participating in coursework with the University of Utah Reading Clinic.

Hear Dani share her experience throughout the practicum, the results they saw with their students as a result of routine implementation, and what it was like working with the UofU Reading Clinic staff. 📚

📚 A $7.13M investment in literacy.

The University of Utah Reading Clinic has received a $7.13 million, five-year grant to expand evidence-based reading support for students in Grades 4–12, particularly in rural and highly impacted communities.

This initiative will also create hands-on training opportunities for future educators while strengthening partnerships between universities and school districts.

A major step forward in expanding access to effective reading support for students who need it most. ❤️📖
