Available a few weeks ago, I had my latest (sixth) book go into print. It is entitled Compound Words and is a reference book written to help writers quickly find the best format for a compound word that might come up while writing. Preparing for conducting club meetings in addition to hours and hours of time I began devoting to piano composition and getting them read for publication, in addition to a declining interest in club members' willingness to attend meetings, led to the discontinuing of meetings a few years ago. However, due to a continued interest in the Utah Book Writers Club page on my Facebook, whatever, I have decided to keep this page open. What it will be, for the time being at least, is a location to introduce those who "like" the page to learn what we are doing--none of us have given up on writing.

Last week David R. Christensen's sixth book was published. A change from his first five books (each fiction) this one is a non-fiction resource book containing just over 15,500 compound words. It is entitled "Compound Words" and is available at amazon.com. It is of particular value to writers. I should know because I use it daily in all my writing. It is surprising just how often I need the spelling of a compound word: single word, multiple word, or hyphenated word.

Within hours of my previous posting, I have had three responses. One respondent showed interest in the anthology, but her page didn't permit me to make a Friend request. So, Let me add a brief follow-up to what I posted four hours ago. I've chatted with the Club's secretary who informed me that the system of rotating short stories is not good. She said she would never share something she wrote with a dozen or so strangers. I agree, now that it has been explained to me. I will look for a better way of each writer to get secured access to others for short-story reviews. When I finally figure it out, I will post on Facebook, Utah Book Writers Club, a note to see the Club website for details.

Utah Book Writers Club was established in May of 2011. It was hoped that a group of writers and hopefuls could meet together monthly and lift each other up as the rest of the group lifted them. As near as I can quickly determine we have had about 40 persons attend meetings over the past 5 years. In the end, there were only 5 members who have "hung-in-there" for the long hall. During the past several months the club took and interesting turn. It was decided that we would all work together to produce an anthology containing short stories we have written. After enough stories have been collected and edited, they will be published in paper back and e book formats. The cost of the paper back would be the cost of printing and the e books would be free. At the end of the anthology, each contributing author would have perhaps a page to present their bio and a list of their other writings (which would be for sale) and where these writings might be found. Formal club meetings were no longer necessary in that the remaining club members are encouraged to send completed short stories to another club member who would read, critique, and cc their remarks back to the author and on to the next club member. Connie Walker's book, Revelation of Riddles went into print last month, November 2015--the fourth in a series of six books--the first of the second trilogy--and a wonderful fantasy book. (All four of these fantasy novels are available through Amazon.com in paperback and kindle.) Also, David R. Christensen and Bill Walker co-composed two books of piano sheet music: Exploring Key Signatures Volume 1 Major Keys (115 pages of sheet music with two compositions in each of the 12 major key signatures) and Exploring Time Signatures Volume 1 (116 pages of sheet music in 14 different time signatures). Two nights ago the monthly (March) meeting of the Club was held. For a few months we have discussed having members of the Club write short stories for an anthology to be put into print by November 1st of this year. Those in attendance voted to proceed. The goal is to create an anthology and to fill a book with short stories, the total number of pages for the book being somewhere between 150 and 200. It was also decided that each member work toward writing two short stories: one dealing with deception and the other with truth. Of course these ideas may be transparent or subtle in the text.

This is just a notice to let each of you know my fifth book is now in print and available for Kindle. It's entitled Worlds Without Number: A Science Fiction Novel for LDS Readers. It was a blast to write and I hope it is a blast to read.
