"I’m a liver transplant recipient. I received a split liver, and a 6-year-old received the other half 20 years ago. God bless organ donors.

These are pictures of me and the surgeon who performed my surgery in 2006, and a picture of me at my home in Florida the other day. I’m truly grateful."

"My kidney transplant journey started in 1983 when I was hospitalized at Methodist Hospital in Omaha right after graduation. I was diagnosed with membranous glomerulonephritis and was pretty sick most of the summer losing almost 75 lbs.
I had a scholarship to play football that fall at the University of Nebraska-Omaha but my playing days were over. Fast forward to 1988 when my kidney function decreased to where I would have to start dialysis or receive a transplant.

My sister stepped forward and donated one of her kidneys and gave me the gift of life. She recovered after the surgery but I went through two rejection episodes spending a couple of months in and out of the hospital. Once my anti-rejection medications were adjusted, I was finally able to leave the hospital and not look back.
I've been blessed with 38 years of normal kidney function and able to graduate from college, get married and raise a family of three children. Our first grandchild should be born in the next week.

I've been able to volunteer as a coach for many sports, serve as a Y-Pal with the YMCA, volunteered for the Boy Scouts of America, and mentor for kidney transplant candidates and recipients.

All of this happened because my sister gave me a second chance at a better quality of life. I have been blessed but there are so many others out there waiting for their opportunity to enjoy a better quality of life, please consider donation and providing the gift of life."

“On May 4, 2012, it was anything but ordinary. At 4 p.m., my husband and I were getting ready to leave when two sheriffs came up my driveway. All I said was, ‘Which one of my boys is in trouble?’ They asked if I was Greg's mom. They asked to come in. We sat in the living room when one proceeded to tell me that Greg was in an accident. In my mind, I prayed that he was in the hospital. My prayers weren’t wrong, but he was in the morgue.

My life, as well as my oldest son’s life, changed.

When I was contacted by the organ procurement organization (OPO) about tissue donation, I said that I needed to contact his dad, my ex, to see if he would like to do this. He said 'yes'. They called back, and I gave them permission. I went through all their questions to the best of my knowledge.

I chose to have him cremated. Since he was such an outdoorsman, we placed his ashes in a goose decoy, since he wouldn’t fit in a duck. I hated finding out from his girlfriend Ashley that he had asked her dad for permission to marry her. Coming from a 23-year-old, chivalry isn’t dead.

I have only heard from two recipients, for his cornea and a tendon graft. I have received a list of where his donations all went. Greg was always a person who helped others, whether asked or jumping in. Knowing he continued to help others with his donation of skin, tendons, veins, and more, he continues to live.
I speak his name to keep his memory alive.

I am pleased to introduce to you my son Greg, forever 23, pictured with his dog Gus."

"I wrote to my donor’s family one year after my lung and liver transplant. I later received a letter from my donor’s mother. She signed it with her name and phone number, and I called her soon after. A few months later, we drove five hours to a Path of Remembrance gathering, where I met about 25 members of my donor’s family. It was wonderful and deeply touching. I stay in contact with my donor’s sweet mother through texts, calls and messages. I feel like I am part of the most loving, giving and kind family. I am truly blessed and thankful every day."

“I was first diagnosed with kidney disease after my high school graduation. I had a scholarship to play football at the University of Nebraska Omaha in 1983. That summer, I lost nearly 75 pounds and was told I would not be able to return to the field and would eventually need dialysis or a transplant.

Five years later, I was facing both. I had been on the donor list when it was determined that my kidney function had declined to the point that dialysis or a transplant was necessary. When a deceased donor was not available, my sister stepped forward and gave me the gift of life.

She recovered after the procedure, but I went through two rejection episodes after the transplant. The team at the hospital was eventually able to adjust my anti-rejection medication so my body gradually accepted my new kidney.

Over the past 38 years, my journey has been incredibly blessed because of my sister’s gift. I was able to meet the love of my life and get married in 1992, have three children, and now have a grandchild on the way.

I returned to being a productive member of society and have volunteered with many organizations. I have also mentored other transplant and dialysis patients, trying to give back to others.”

“My son, Charlie, was diagnosed with a genetic condition called Alpha-1 Antitrypsin Deficiency when he was a few months old. He was placed on the transplant waiting list at 7 months old. At 10 1/2 months, he received a liver transplant.

The photos below show Charlie before and after his transplant. He will turn 14 this summer and is doing great.

We are very thankful to his donor and their family for choosing donation.”

On Memorial Day, we honor the individuals who made the ultimate sacrifice for our country.

Corporal Benjamin S. Kopp, a member of the 75th Army Ranger Regiment, saved six of his comrades when his unit came under attack in Afghanistan. He was mortally wounded and saved four more lives back in the United States through his selfless gift of organ donation.

To honor Corporal Kopp and all other brave soldiers who became organ, eye and tissue donors, the Fallen Soldier statue stands at the National Donor Memorial and honors members of our military who made organ, eye, and tissue donation their last courageous act of service. The site is a place of peace for all who wish to honor the gift of life! 💙💚
