We had a GREAT day for our second farm field trip with J L Buford Intermediate Center and Jefferson County Ag in the Classroom!

Fifth grade students and teachers visited Howard Farms to have a day of hands-on learning about agriculture by visiting different stations.

Amanda Rincker taught a station about beef cattle and how they are fed, worked in a chute, and cared for. The students got to run a cow through the chute🐮

Farm Credit Illinois: taught the students how corn and beans grow, the different varieties, and what they are used for 🌽

Nancy Howard brought her horses over to talk about equine, how horses are cared for, and the different tack used to ride them. The kids got to measure each other to see how tall they are in hands 🐴

John Howard and board members covered farm equipment and what it is used for, especially how combines work. The students got to climb in the cab to see the farmer’s view 🚜

Farm credit ran our farm obstacle course. The students got to try their hand at climbing a fence, pushing wheelbarrows, etc.🪣

Mt. Vernon FFA students maned our small animal station where the students could hold or pet pigs, chickens, miniature goats, and rabbits.

Students had a sack lunch in the shed, Culver's donated ice cream for everyone, and Gary Hamerski - Country Financial sponsored a water station for the students.

Frey Farms donated pumpkins for each child and student to take home. Illinois Corn and Illinois Beef donated fun swag for the students to take home as well.

THANK YOU to our hosts, our station leaders, and the students and teachers for making this a great day on the farm

🐄 September means Ag in the Classroom is back in session! 🐄

Our topic for the month was beef, and students learned all about beef cattle, their digestion, and the many products we get from them!

Did you know cows spend approximately 8 hours a day chewing their cud?

Here’s a look at what our students learned:

🐮 1st Grade: Students created their own beef cattle breed and enjoyed a “Beef Feed Sack” filled with different snacks representing the types of feed cows eat.

🐮 3rd Grade: Students played Beefo Bingo while learning about the many by-products that come from beef cattle.

🐮 4th and 5th Grade: Students learned where different cuts of beef come from on the cow and explored the many useful by-products we get from cattle. Each student also received a cow tag to attach to their backpack as a reminder of what they learned! Thank you Tractor Supply Co. in Mount Vernon for donating cow tags to the students!

Did you know cows are ruminant animals, just like goats, sheep, deer, and camels? Ruminants have a specialized digestive system with a stomach divided into four compartments that helps them break down plant material.

We had a wonderful month learning about beef and the important role cattle play in agriculture!
