This is What Being the Hands and Feet of Jesus Looks Like

Sometimes, being the hands and feet of Jesus looks like a meal. Sometimes it looks like a donation. Sometimes it looks like a walker, a shower bench, or simply someone willing to say, “How can I help?“

Morganton 1st Church of God has long been known for its heart for serving the community. Recently, the church partnered with The Outreach Center to help meet the needs of local seniors - and their generosity is making a tremendous difference.

The church donated food and money to help purchase additional food for seniors in need. They also donated walkers and other equipment that can make everyday life safer and easier for older adults.

But one particular story shows just how powerful a simple act of kindness can be:
The Outreach Center shared a story with Morganton 1st Church of God about a senior who uses a walker and had not been able to take a bath or shower in three years. He was unable to lift his leg over the side of the bathtub, making it impossible for him to safely get in and out. When one woman at the church heard about his situation, she immediately gave money to purchase a handheld showerhead. Then, a family within the church, immediately ordered a shower bench for him. The Outreach Center delivered the equipment, set it up, and showed him how to use it. His response was filled with gratitude. He said, “That shower is going to feel so so good!”

Think about that for a moment.

Something many of us take for granted - a simple shower - was something this gentleman had been without for three years. Because people were willing to come alongside him, something that seemed impossible suddenly became possible.

This is what being the hands and feet of Jesus looks like.

It looks like noticing a need and doing something about it. It looks like giving what you can. It looks like a church, a family, and a community coming together to restore dignity, comfort, and Hope.

What a huge difference we can make in someone’s life when we simply choose to help.

Come alongside The Outreach Center and help us shower our seniors with blessings. Together, we can meet practical needs, bring Hope, and remind our seniors that they are loved, valued, and not forgotten.

Sometimes a small act of kindness can make a world of difference!

Carrying the Quiet Burdens: How Our Community Can Wrap Around Our Seniors

In the quiet corners of our neighborhoods, far too many seniors are facing an impossible, invisible weight. When every month brings a heartbreaking choice between keeping the lights on, buying vital medications, or purchasing basic daily necessities, dignity often gets quietly pushed aside. The Outreach Center works tirelessly to bridge this gap, delivering food on a monthly basis, but the reality is that our elders carry so many more needs that go far beyond a box of groceries. Many are navigating life without family, finding their only daily comfort and companionship in a loyal cat or dog. When the choice is paying a power bill, even pet food or essential care items like hygiene products, and cleaning supplies become out of reach. We can help lift this weight from their shoulders.
The Outreach Center is currently welcoming support to provide the critical items our seniors rely on to live safely and comfortably at home:

Nutritional support: Donations of canned goods and dry foods ensure a senior’s pantry stays stocked. And our seniors always enjoy a special sweet treat.

Mobility and independence aids: Items like walkers, shower benches, and bedside commodes, help restore safety, and freedom of movement.

Health and comfort essentials:
Personal care items, adult protective undergarments (Depends), and small heaters or fans help keep seniors comfortable through changing seasons.

Household care:
Basic toiletries and cleaning supplies make a profound difference in daily living.

Companion support:
Donations of dog and cat food help ensure our seniors never have to share their own meager meals or part with the beloved pets that keep loneliness at bay.

No one who helped build our community should ever have to weather their later years in hardship or isolation. To learn how you can donate goods or support The Outreach Center’s mission for Burke County‘s seniors, reach out today and help ensure our neighbors are never forgotten.

Reaching Out and Lifting Up:
How The Outreach Center Supports Burke County Seniors

In Burke County, many seniors face quiet battles with isolation, health crises, and the loss of independence. Whether dealing with cancer treatments, physical injuries, or the daily weight of having no family left, these community members often struggle with the feeling of being unseen or undervalued.
Fortunately, The Outreach Center continues to make a profound difference through its ongoing programs:

* Monthly Food Deliveries: Essential food provisions are delivered regularly to seniors in need, helping address basic nutritional needs.
* Compassionate Visitation: Volunteers and community partners—such as the visitation ministry from Morganton First Church of God—frequently visit to share stories, sing, and pray, bringing much-needed social connection and joy to lonely seniors.
* Safety Repairs: this summer we were blessed with a youth group from South Mountain Baptist Camp who provided hands-on assistance by clearing out garages, repairing and clearing off wheelchair ramps, and even building a brand-new custom ramp complete with handrails for those facing severe mobility challenges or injuries. We are thankful for Foothills Service Project who provided lumber and guidance on construction.

Through these food deliveries, meaningful conversations, and vital home improvements, The Outreach Center ensures that Burke County's seniors are remembered, supported, and cared for.

Then: We served thousands of families each month. The lines were long. The need was real. From the outside, it looked like impact because the numbers were so big.

But we knew something was missing.

We could hand someone food, but we did not always know their name or why they needed food. We could meet an immediate need, but we could not always follow up. We could help for the day, but we did not always know what happened after they drove away.

Now: Although with fewer numbers, we serve more intentionally with a greater impact. We know the seniors on our list. We know who lives alone. We know who has fallen. We know who has no family nearby. We know who needs food, but also needs someone to sit down long enough to listen.

That is what your support makes possible.

You help us do more than distribute food. You help us see people.
Real impact doesn't always come in big numbers. Sometimes it looks like one 89-year-old woman who finally has someone to call.

Today we were able to provide our seniors in Burke County with food and water. Most of our seniors didn’t have access to the essentials after the storm. Thank you to the volunteers and staff that made this possible. ❤️

Part of The Outreach Center's WOW program is Levi's Woodworking Shop. Our amazingly talented Levi has just completed and sold his first custom table. Thank you Mary Wright for the purchase! Levi saved and reclaimed the original floor joists in the upstairs part of our new building. (The old Jordan Cleaners building). So this table is made from 100 year old wood.
If you would like more info on how Levi can build a custom table or piece for you call our office at 828.439.8300 or email [email protected]. We are thankful for our wonderful staff and supporters. Blessings to you and your family.

The Outreach Center's new WOW Woodworking Shop is starting to produce some beautiful pieces. Here's a table our own Levi Michaels is making using the floor joists that were removed as we continue to refurbish the old Jordan Cleaners building, which is the new home of The Outreach Center. Thanks to Levi for repurposing a piece of history. We'll keep you updated on this wonderful table!
