🐝 Honeybees have been part of our farm since 2019. Our bees play such a critical role in pollination, transferring pollen between flowers, which allows our crops to reproduce and produce seeds and fruits/vegetables. Starting in late summer each year, we harvest honey from our hives, which we sell at our weekly market and special events The honey we harvest is pure, raw, and unprocessed - and beautifully golden!

This year, we added another hive, which hugely increased the size of our bee volume. We encourage you to stop by the farm and visit our hives in the southeast and southwest corners of the farm! 🐝🐝🐝

We planted a 🌸POLLINATOR GARDEN🌸 in the southwest corner of the farm! This 1/4-acre area will feature over 40 different varieties of native wildflowers - blooming spring through fall! Quite honestly, for the next three years, the space may look like an unestablished w**d patch, but not to worry - it’s all part of the process, and it will be ready in God’s good timing!

By reintroducing native plants into our farm acreage, we will not only restore biodiversity, but also strengthen ecosystem resilience. Native species provide essential habitat and food sources for pollinators and wildlife, helping to reestablish and support complex ecological networks.

We would like to share a big “thank you” to Kim Vannett and Kristin Svidersky, two members of the NDSU Extension Master Gardener Program, who led this project, and shared their time and resources with us!

At Farm in the Dell, our mission is “transforming disabilities into abilities” through purposeful work and life experiences in a community farm setting. We work with our Garden Engineers on skills, like how to plant a seed in the ground, how/when to water a plant, and how to identify the different between a w**d and a crop. In doing so, they increase things like motor skills and coordination. We also work with them on how to work as a team, how to communicate with a supervisor, and how to stay positive when things get tough. In doing so, they increase things like emotional regulation and cognitive development.

This year, we are putting more of a focus on further developing each Garden Engineer’s individual skillsets. For example, a handful of our Garden Engineers have shown interest and ability in learning to operate some of our equipment, such as our four-wheeler, utility vehicle, and walk-behind tillers.

Check out some of our Garden Engineers practicing with the equipment this week!

Exciting news! We are in the process of launching a MUSHROOM operation at the farm! 🍄‍🟫🍄‍🟫🍄‍🟫 We have spent the last couple of weeks preparing the garden beds and materials for this new endeavor, which will feature wine cap mushrooms!

Wine Cap mushrooms are known for their great taste and amazing health benefits. Naturally low in calories, they are packed with vitamin D, calcium, fiber, and protein - nutrients that help your body make energy, keep your nerves working, and protect it from damage.

Mushrooms will be for sale starting in July! We are planning to sell pre-picked mushrooms at our market and local community markets.

We would like to make a special shout out to .inc for donating the pipe for the raised beds.

📢 ANNOUNCEMENT!📢 We have EXTRA red potato seeds for grabs! If anybody would like some, feel free to stop out at the farm and grab from the large white tote at the northeast corner of the barn. Pick up before the middle of next week (first week in June), so they are still viable!

Last week, we had the opportunity to host the third-annual “PLANTING DAY” in partnership with CNH Industrial for our joint “Feeding Our Own Backyard” program - an initiative that drives increased community collaboration and food security in the local community.

In our second partnership season last year, we - together - were able to grow over 18,000 pounds of corn and potatoes, which touched thousands of lives. Roughly half of the produce was donated to the Great Plains Food Bank and roughly half was distributed through Farm in the Dell’s CSA program and market.

We would like to give a BIG shout out to employees and volunteers from Farm in the Dell, CNH, and the Great Plains Food Bank for getting their hands in the dirt to start planting last week! We are so deeply grateful for this partnership!
