Our new 6-part series tackles the myths surrounding concrete pavement preservation and sets the record straight. The first claim debunked is that preservation is only for roads still in good shape. In reality, concrete pavement preservation is a 60-year-old engineered discipline that extends pavement life 10 to 20 years. It's not a treatment reserved for pavements in pristine condition. Rather, it's the discipline that keeps pavements in good condition throughout their lifespan. Agencies that apply the right treatment at the right time manage deterioration proactively, while those that wait find themselves chasing failures at a far higher cost.

The takeaway: preservation works best when it starts early and continues consistently.

Making the most out of those roadway investments is critical to ensure a long-lasting and well performing network. This presentation will provide examples and perspectives on how many counties and smaller agencies across the country have successfully utilized concrete pavements and overlays. Matt Zeller has announced his official end to his 25+ year tenure at CPAM as he sets to fully retire in early October! Here are a few quotes from a recent interview. Because of his leadership, we more than doubled the square yards of concrete paving in the state.

“Many folks from Minnesota believe we have the best concrete pavements in the country. I agree. But it was a process to get here and we had buy in from everyone involved including MnDOT, counties, suppliers, consultants but most importantly, the contractors who had to put it all together. We have the smoothest roads in the country with the most complicated mix design. It’s so exciting to see it elevate every year.”

In talking with Matt about his experience, it was clear he loved his work as Executive Director and his passion never waned.

“I still love getting to job sites. I still know so many folks from the industry as well as the agencies. I love getting to talk with folks on the job and see what they like or do not like. I have always considered it my job to advance the way we construct our concrete pavements and knowing what works in the field is crucial.”

"Wright County, Minnesota has selected a concrete roundabout for the intersection of County Roads 8 and 35 ... Together, the project team, with assistance from the Concrete Paving Association of Minnesota, developed a durable transportation solution that will meet the needs of drivers for years to come. To improve safety, traffic flow, and long-term performance, the county chose concrete pavement as the preferred solution for the roundabout.
"Concrete roundabouts are well-suited for high-load intersections because of their ability to stand up against heavy vehicles and turning movements. Additionally, unlike asphalt, concrete paving resists rutting and shoving under heavy turning trucks. Concrete roundabouts reduce long-term maintenance and traffic disruptions in high traffic areas such as these. Ultimately, the use of concrete construction within roundabouts delivers a longer service life with lower life-cycle costs. When durability matters, concrete continues to prove its value."
