It's crazy to think back and remember the first field of sunflowers I planted for the elderly gentleman that I bought the field from. I felt compelled to complete his legacy of beautifying the land with flowers. It was a tribute to him and all the years of hard work he put into his gardening and flowers. When I planted those first sunflower seeds, I had no idea of the journey I was about the embark on.
Fast forward seven sunflower seasons later, 33 fields, countless visitors, stories, memories, experiences and lessons learned - I feel like a different person writing this than the person who planted those first sunflower seeds. This experience has been one of the best, yet most challenging of my life and those challenges have taught me, they have molded me and they have given me a new perspective.
This amazing experience has shown me that I love people, I love serving them and I love spreading sunshine. It has also shown me that rest is imperative for growth. After much prayer and processing, my family and I know that it is time for rest. Just like the ground that is sown with seeds every spring needs a season of rest after harvest so that it can become replenished, we also need a time of replenishment. As hard as it is to say that we will not be planting a Fish Sunflower field this year, we know it is the right decision.
Starting the Spread the Sunshine mission sparked something deep inside and a desire to serve others and to spread love and light started growing. From this desire the Sunshine Foundation of America non profit organization was born. While we take time to rest and replenish from the field work, we will be focusing on this new mission. The sunshine, positivity, peace, and camaraderie that came out of the sunflower fields was just the start of what we hope to accomplish with this non profit. The goal of this non profit is simple yet strong, we want to spread sunshine to others through acts of kindness; whether it is through a helping hand, providing for a need or sponsoring a sunflower field for a community that needs healing. Proverbs 11:30 says “the seeds of good deeds become a tree of life…” and this is our mission, to plant seeds of good deeds for others.
