Quilter Sara Lyons took the blue ribbon in the small appliqued quilt category at the Monterey County Fair with this beautiful piece celebrating Salinas Valley farmworkers. "The Salinas Valley and surrounding area grows most of the strawberries, lettuce and broccoli for the country, as well as artichokes, blackberries, and garlic. I was lucky to spend my professional career as a physician, working with the kind and generous people who work in the fields, tending and harvesting the food we eat," Sara said. "I made this quilt to thank them for the important work they do to feed us all with the healthy and delicious food we are lucky enough to enjoy."

"This is just like Christmas!" said one of the 779 Salinas schoolchildren who were carefully fitted with new school shoes last month. Youngsters from our farmworker families, who seldom receive brand-new gear, picked out their shoes after their feet were measured by Nancy's Project volunteers. Financial support for Nancy's Project makes it possible to purchase the shoes for our kids, so THANK YOU and slow down for the school buses! Something's fishy! Nancy's Project received our first delivery of fish from our new partnership with Monterey Bay Fisheries Trust (MBFT). MBFT paired Nancy's Project with Sea Harvest in Moss Landing. Sea Harvest's Walter Deyerle delivered 200 pounds of Sablefish his crew caught and flash froze in two-pound vacuumed packs. MBFT launched the Community Seafood Program in November 2020 to provide healthy, sustainably harvested seafood to local families, farmworkers, seniors, and others in need of food
assistance, along with economic support to local fishermen, food workers, and seafood businesses.
