Did you know that today is National Senior Health and Fitness Day? It's a delightful reminder that staying active is about so much more than simply physical health. Movement builds connection, lifts mood, sharpens the mind, and gives each day a little more shape and purpose.

The central coast is fortunate to have wonderful senior centers where that kind of whole-person wellness happens every day. Whether you are looking for a fitness class, a friendly face, or simply a place to belong, these are a few centers in our community that are ready to welcome you.

Stop in, look up a class, or bring a neighbor. Make this chapter one of your most vibrant!

Memorial Day invites us to pause and honor those whose lives shaped ours. For many in our community, this day arrives not as a date on the calendar but as a feeling quietly present all year long.

To everyone carrying a loss today, whether recent or long held, you are not alone in that. Love and remembrance are not signs that healing has not happened. They are signs that it has, and that the person you are honoring left something in you worth keeping. We're here for you.

Did you know that there are over 3,200 registered non-profits in Monterey, Santa Cruz, and San Benito Counties? Today is California Nonprofits Day, and we are proud to be part of a community of organizations across these counties and the state that show up for people when it matters most.

At Hospice Giving Foundation, that means supporting end-of-life care, walking alongside families through loss, and investing in the programs that make our community more compassionate.

We do want to give a special shoutout to our grantees for the hard work they do every day. Please take a moment to recognize Alzheimer's Association of Northern California, Breast Cancer Assistance Group of Monterey County, Central Coast VNA & Hospice, Coastal Kids Home Care, Hospice of Santa Cruz County, Jacob's Heart Children's Cancer Support Services, Jerry Rubin Foundation for Cancer Care - Jerry's Place, Legal Services for Seniors, Montage Health Foundation, Natividad Foundation, Partnership for Children, and Salinas Valley Health Foundation.

To our partners, donors, volunteers, and care teams: this day is for you. đź’›

This Mother's Day, our CEO, Erin, reminds us that joy and grief can live in the same moment, and that both deserve to be seen.

In her latest letter, she reflects on a connected breakfast with her kids in Carmel, a call to her mother 3,000 miles away, and the quiet truth of how working in end-of-life care means you can't look away from what will come.

She also shares what stayed with her from this year's Gratitude Luncheon, where Dr. Laura Berman spoke not about getting through grief, but moving with it.

At Hospice Giving Foundation, that's the kind of presence we believe in. Not fixing. Not rushing. But showing up.

Read Erin's full letter at hospicegiving.org/2026/05/10/ceo-message-may-2026, including six simple, powerful ways to support someone who is grieving.

At a bilingual outreach event in Greenfield, Legal Services for Seniors connected with “Marta,” a senior navigating her husband’s declining health and the complex decisions that followed. Feeling overwhelmed and without clear guidance, she was introduced to Advance Healthcare Directives, as well as the importance of a Will and Financial Power of Attorney.

With support from Legal Services for Seniors, Marta and her husband documented their wishes, providing clarity and peace of mind during a challenging time.

(Client story shared using a fictitious name to protect confidentiality.)

With support from Hospice Giving Foundation, Legal Services for Seniors continues to provide adults 60+ with free, essential estate and healthcare planning services throughout our community.

This World Book Day, we’re sharing five books (plus one to look forward to) that offer something rare: honest companionship through one of life’s most tender seasons.

Whether you’re supporting a loved one at the end of life, navigating grief, or reflecting on how to live more fully, these titles meet you where you are and gently guide you forward.

"The Long Goodbye" by Meghan O'Rourke. A deeply personal memoir about losing her mother to cancer, O'Rourke writes with clarity and compassion about what it means to carry love beyond loss and why our culture needs more space for that experience.

"Forever Life" by Carol Pobanz. Written by a hospice chaplain after a child's death, this beautifully illustrated book uses the gentle framework of "three lives" to help children ages 4 to 12 navigate loss with hope and understanding. It has resonated just as deeply with adults.

"Briefly Perfectly Human" by Alua Arthur. Death doula Alua Arthur weaves her own story with those of the people she has walked alongside at the end of their lives. The result is a life-affirming reflection on what truly matters and how to show up more fully for the people we love.

"With the End in Mind" by Dr Kathryn Mannix. A palliative care physician draws on decades of bedside experience to show that dying can be more peaceful than we fear, and that open, loving conversation is one of the most healing gifts we can offer.

"Todo Pasa… y esto También Pasará" by Martha Alicia Chávez. Escritora. This treasured Spanish-language guide reminds readers, as they navigate pain and uncertainty, that all things pass. A steady, reassuring hand for Spanish-speaking members of our community walking a difficult road.

Bonus: "Crying Out Loud" by Dr. Laura Berman (coming October 2026). We're already looking forward to this one. Dr. Laura Berman brings her signature warmth and depth to the experience of loss in what promises to be an important and timely read. Mark your calendar and watch for it this fall.

What books have supported you through your loss? We'd love to know in the comments below.

This Earth Day, we're inviting our community to step outside, not to forget grief, but to let the natural world walk alongside it. Research consistently shows that time in nature can be one of the most accessible and meaningful companions through loss. Here are five ways to begin:

1. Spend 20 minutes outside every day.
2. Try "forest bathing".
3. Let the seasons speak to your grief.
4. Plant something and tend it.
5. Walk with others under an open sky.
