In Loving Memory of Dolores Huerta (1930–2026)
Today, we mourn the passing of a giant in the American labor movement, a tireless champion of social justice, and a courageous voice for working people everywhere.
Dolores Huerta dedicated her extraordinary life to the belief that every worker, regardless of background, deserves dignity, respect, fair wages, and safe working conditions. As a co-founder of the United Farm Workers, she helped transform the lives of countless working families, challenging powerful interests and fighting for those whose voices had too often been ignored.
Her life's work came at an extraordinary personal cost. She endured discrimination, threats, arrests, physical violence, and profound personal sacrifices, yet never wavered in her commitment to justice. Through it all, she demonstrated that meaningful change requires not only courage and conviction, but an unwavering willingness to stand alongside those who need us most.
Her contributions extended far beyond the fields of California. She helped strengthen the labor movement, advance civil rights, empower women, and inspire generations of activists and union members to stand together in solidarity.
As union members, we recognize that the rights and protections working people enjoy today did not come freely. They were earned through the determination, struggle, and sacrifice of individuals like Dolores Huerta.
Her passing reminds us that the fight for economic justice, equality, and dignity in the workplace is never truly finished. It is a responsibility passed from one generation to the next.
We honor her memory not simply by remembering what she accomplished, but by continuing the work to which she devoted her life.
Rest in power, Dolores Huerta. Your courage changed lives, your sacrifices changed history, and your legacy will continue to inspire us.
