🎹✨ EHF 2025 Scholarship Honoree: Martin Shahbazyan ✨🎹

Thanks to generous support, we are thrilled to offer an additional scholarship this year to Martin Shahbazyan! A talented pianist from Yerevan, Armenia, Martin is currently pursuing an Artist Diploma at Texas Christian University. He has won numerous awards, including the Grand Prix at the Harmonium Onlineplus IMC and first prize at the Franz Liszt Center International Piano Competition.

Martin has performed across Armenia, Europe, and the U.S., premiered works by Armenian composers, and even composes for his prog/rock folk trio. We can’t wait to see where his music takes him next!

🎻✨ EHF 2025 Scholarship Winner: Alisa Roberta Gukasian
We’re excited to announce that Alisa Roberta Gukasian is the recipient of the EHF 2025 Scholarship! A classical violinist and educator based in Southern California, Alisa is pursuing her Master of Music at UCLA, with a passion for preserving Armenian folk music and studying the kamancha.

With honors from CSUN and experience as Assistant Concertmaster of the CSUN Symphony, Alisa is dedicated to both performance and music education. She hopes to pursue a DMA to combine her love for music, scholarship, and teaching.

We are excited to announce that Araksya Karapetyan will be our Mistress of Ceremonies for the “Portraits of the Homeland” concert on November 11 at the Alex Theater in Glendale, CA. A dedicated advocate for the Armenian community, Araksya has tirelessly worked to raise awareness of Armenian causes.

This concert benefits the EHF’s mission to promote music awareness and support Armenian college music students. As a co-anchor for Good Day LA on FOX 11 since 2012, Araksya combines her passion for journalism with her commitment to her heritage. Meet Karl Vardanyan, the 2024 EHF scholarship recipient. Karl is a distinguished classically trained guitarist with deep expertise in music education, arranging, production, and sound design. At just 15, he won the solo instrumental category at the “Russian Spring - 2015” festival in Budapest. In 2022, he secured first place in the classical guitar category at Loyola Marymount University’s ‘New Music on the Bluff’ competition. As a USC senior, Karl studies performance under William Kanengiser, Scott Tennant, and Adam Del Monte, and takes arranging and composition lessons with Brian Head. He has also participated in masterclasses with legendary guitarists like Pepe Romero, Paul O’Dette, A.J. Minette, David Russell, and Richard Savino.

In 2023, Karl expanded his artistic vision by learning the Armenian tar and founding the ethno-classical ensemble Haykar. This group fuses traditional Armenian instruments with classical elements, showcasing his unique blend of musical influences.

Meet 2023 EHF Scholarship recipient, Grigori Balasanyan. Grigori has been composing music since the age of 8, his projects range from concert pieces to multimedia collaborations & film scores. His compositional style blends his Armenian culture & contemporary writing styles. Using various musical languages of different cultures, he creates his own musical style that allows him to portray modern issues of the world.

One of Grigori’s biggest projects is his first ballet based on a fairy tale written by the former First Lady of Armenia, Nouneh Sarkissian. It was recorded in ‘19 by the Armenian State Symphonic Orchestra & premiered in ‘21 at the Yerevan State Choreographic College, it is the first children's ballet in the history of Armenian music.

Grigori is a winner of multiple international & local composer competitions. He has released 2 CD albums: "Melody" and "Alice in Wonderland.” From ‘20-‘22 Grigori wrote multiple large ensemble pieces that were performed by BHS Instrumental Music Association in Burbank, CA. During the same period, he collaborated with BHS Animation Program and IMA on a piece called "The Maya" presented in Nickelodeon studios. Grigori also did multiple multimedia collaborations with London-based global media localization and access company "Haymillian.” He wrote the music for an educational animation in Latin American Spanish that teaches children basic English. He is also the composer of multiple short film scores, for collaborations with Yerevan State School of Cinematography students.

After becoming a part of the Berklee community in 2022, he had 8 premieres of concert pieces at the Boston Conservatory at Berklee. One of the recent premieres was "Purgatorio" written for a symphonic orchestra, it premiered in February ‘23 as a part of the Boston New Music Festival. In April ‘23 one of Grigori's string quintets premiered at a chamber masterclass organized by violinist Judith Eissenberg and cellist Rhonda Rider. Currently, Grigori is working on his first cello concerto.

Meet Ani Sinanyan, 2022 EHF Scholarship Recipient. Ani was born into a family of musicians. A talented, promising, young violinist, she began taking violin lessons at the age of 6.
A prizewinner of many competitions, Ani was a finalist of the Youth Talent Festival, where she was given the honor to perform in the Carnegie Weill Recital Hall in New York City at the age of 9. In the summer of 2018, Ani traveled to Whistler, Canada, where she performed in the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra Institution at Whistler as principal second violin, under the baton of esteemed conductor and composer Bramwell Tovey. As a member of the American Youth Symphony, Ani has recorded and performed with many prominent composers and performers, including Sarah Chang, David Newman, Kris Bowers, and more.  She received her Bachelor’s degree at the UCLA Herb Alpert School of Music as a student of Movses Pogossian and Varty Manouelian. Ani is currently pursuing her Master’s degree at the Cleveland Institute of Music, studying with Ilya Kaler & Olga Dubossarskaya Kaler. While continuing her training as a classical violinist, Ani has also joined her parents’ musical duo, forming their familial ensemble, Trio SynThesis.
