What could change when one important step opens the door to greater stability?

"It’s gonna get me off the street. Getting my ID unlocks my disability benefits for my card, but in the meantime because of the wait all I do is save it."

At First Steps, we are grateful to walk alongside people as they take meaningful steps toward stability and independence. We’re honored to support her on this journey and look forward to celebrating each milestone. Thank you Lord for this blessing of getting to help each other when in need.

It’s truly inspiring to see what happens when caring people and community partners unite to tackle homelessness right here in Mobile.

Real progress takes teamwork, and Steps to Shelter wouldn't be possible without genuine collaboration. A heartfelt thank-you to Beyond AI, Port City Refuge First Steps, Bright Way Living, AltaPointe Health and The University of South Alabama for leaning in, sharing resources, and working together to build real solutions for our community.

An estimated 3,000 people are facing homelessness in Mobile. But local advocates said the core issue isn’t always a lack of money—it’s a lack of connection — WKRG Mya Falgout reports https://www.wkrg.com/mobile-county/new-website-connects-mobile-boarding-homes/?utm_medium=social&utm_source=facebook_WKRG

From IDs to open doors: Introducing Steps To Shelter.

At First Steps, we see every day how essential vital records—birth certificates, Social Security cards, and state IDs—are to rebuilding a life. But once someone has their paperwork in hand, the next critical hurdle is almost always safe, accessible shelter.

That’s why we launched Steps To Shelter, an initiative connecting Mobile caseworkers and service agencies directly with local boarding homes and transitional housing providers in real time.

No more outdated phone trees or guesswork.

A direct, verified pipeline between property owners and clients ready to move in.

Follow our new initiative page at Steps To Shelter and learn how it works at stepstoshelter.com.

For this gentleman, getting his ID represents an opportunity to move forward and begin working toward his goals. “It’s helping so I can get me a job and get my life situated with my ID.” Having proper identification can open doors to opportunities that many of us may take for granted, including employment and the ability to take important steps toward greater stability and independence.

He shared how meaningful the support was to him, saying, “It’s very important, man. I appreciate y’all. Mighty, mighty blessing help, and amen.” Every document obtained and every step completed can help remove another barrier standing in the way of someone’s goals.

This is a testament to God and His love as it states in Romans 8:28, in all things God works for the good of those who love Him, who have been called according to His purpose 🙌

This couple is working toward a simple but meaningful goal: finding a house and moving out of homelessness. As they shared with us, “We are trying to get a house. We are tired of being homeless.”

At First Steps, we have the privilege of walking alongside individuals and families as they work to overcome barriers and take important steps toward greater stability. For this couple, that means helping them obtain the identification and documents they need as they continue working toward their goal of securing a place to call home.

As they received help, they shared just how meaningful the support was to them: “You made me cry because y’all are helping us. This is no joke, I never thought I would see anyone help us. Lord, thank you.”

We are grateful to be part of their journey and to support them as they take these first steps forward. We look forward to celebrating each milestone with them as they continue working toward a home of their own.

All glory to God for making this possible and continuing to help more people 🙌🏽

Not long ago, this woman was the one helping others find their way to First Steps.

Now, after spending the last year on the streets, she finds herself needing that same support.

“I’m trying to get my disability,” she shared. “Without my Social Security, I can’t get anything.”

Right now, obtaining Social Security documents could be the key to accessing the support that will help her move forward. And even in the midst of uncertainty, she still has hope for what’s ahead.

“I’m gonna get off the street" she said.

With this barrier removed, she is one step closer to the stability she needs and the future she is working toward.

What changes in your life when you get an ID?

For this gentleman, it means the opportunity to change his money situation and take steps toward a better future.

“Rather than waiting 3 months to get my SSI because I don't have an ID,” he explained, getting his identification will help him move forward and access the money he needs.

His goals reach beyond obtaining a document. He wants to get a pickup truck, get some work, and ultimately get out of the streets.

For him, an ID is a step toward transportation, employment, financial stability, and a fresh start.

With First Steps' help, he is taking that step toward the future he envisions for himself. One ID. One opportunity. One step closer to a new beginning.
