YOU NEED A JOB. BUT FIRST, YOU NEED AN ID.
Imagine waking up one morning with absolutely no identification.
No driver's license.
No state ID.
No birth certificate.
No Social Security card.
You're homeless. You're struggling. But you want to change your life.
You want to work. You want to earn a paycheck. You want to get back on your feet.
And finally, you've found an employer willing to hire you!
Your family is excited!
Your friends are excited!
Society is cheering you on!
Everyone you know is excited because YOU'RE FINALLY GOING TO GET A JOB!
For the first time in a long time, you can see a little hope on the horizon.
Maybe this is your chance.
Maybe this is the beginning of a new life.
BUT THERE'S JUST ONE PROBLEM...
Before you can start working, you need an Alabama state ID.
Sounds simple enough, doesn't it?
STEP 1: GET YOUR BIRTH CERTIFICATE.
Let's say you were born in another state.
First, you need to find a computer or smartphone with internet access.
Find the correct state's vital records office. Download the application. Find somewhere to print it. Fill it out.
Depending on the state, you may have to get the application notarized, purchase a money order, and mail everything off.
SHOCK!
You discover that to get your birth certificate, you may first have to provide another acceptable form of identification.
Wait a minute.
You're trying to get your birth certificate so you can get an ID.
BUT NOW YOU NEED AN ID TO GET YOUR BIRTH CERTIFICATE?
How does that even work?
Somehow, you manage to find a way through the requirements, perhaps with additional paperwork or someone helping you.
Then you wait.
Weeks go by. In some cases, it can take two or three months before your birth certificate arrives.
And we've even been told of cases where the wait could be SIX TO EIGHT MONTHS!
Eight months just to get one document you need before you can even apply for your state ID.
But finally, you have it!
STEP 2: GET YOUR SOCIAL SECURITY CARD.
Now it's time to get your replacement Social Security card.
You walk into the Social Security office with your newly acquired birth certificate, thinking you're finally making progress.
SHOCK! HERE WE GO AGAIN!
You're told that Social Security DOES NOT ACCEPT A BIRTH CERTIFICATE AS PROOF OF YOUR IDENTITY!
Wait a minute!
You just spent weeks trying to get your birth certificate so you could prove who you are.
AND NOW YOU'RE TOLD IT DOESN'T PROVE WHO YOU ARE?
So how do you prove your identity when you don't have an ID?
If you have no other acceptable identification, you may have to find a doctor or medical clinic, schedule an appointment, arrange transportation, and obtain certified medical records showing your name and date of birth or age.
Those medical records may be accepted by Social Security as proof of your identity.
THINK ABOUT THAT!
You may have to go to a doctor to prove who you are, so you can get a Social Security card, so you can get an Alabama state ID, so you can finally get a job!
And remember...
YOU STILL HAVEN'T EARNED YOUR FIRST PAYCHECK!
But you keep going.
You finally receive your replacement Social Security card.
Now you have your birth certificate AND your Social Security card.
Surely you're ready now!
STEP 3: FINALLY, YOU'RE READY TO GET YOUR ALABAMA STATE ID!
Weeks have passed. Maybe even months.
You've finally received your birth certificate.
You've managed to obtain the medical records needed to prove your identity to Social Security.
You've received your replacement Social Security card.
You've arranged transportation, gathered your paperwork, and made your way to the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA).
You're excited. You're finally going to get that state ID so you can go tho work.
BUT WAIT! ANOTHER SHOCK!
You're told that because your birth certificate doesn't have a photograph, you need a THIRD FORM OF IDENTIFICATION!
A third ID?
YOU STARTED THIS JOURNEY WITH NO IDENTIFICATION AT ALL!
You struggled for weeks, maybe months, just to get the first two documents.
And now, standing at what you thought was the finish line, you're told you still don't have enough.
YOU'RE SHUT DOWN RIGHT AT THE END.
And then something else happens.
Something that makes all those weeks of struggling even harder to accept.
AND REMEMBER THAT JOB YOU WERE SO EXCITED ABOUT?
The one that gave you hope.
The one that could have helped you get off the streets.
The one that could have given you a paycheck, a little dignity, and a chance to start rebuilding your life.
IT'S GONE.
While you were spending weeks, maybe months, trying to prove who you are...
THEY GAVE THAT JOB TO SOMEONE WHO ALREADY HAD AN ID.
Not because you weren't willing to work.
Not because you didn't want the job.
Not because you weren't trying.
BUT BECAUSE YOU COULDN'T GET THE ONE THING YOU NEEDED TO GET STARTED.
A simple piece of identification.
And now you're right back where you started.

SORRY. YOU STILL DON'T HAVE ENOUGH IDENTIFICATION.
WOULD THAT BE THE MOMENT YOU GAVE UP?
Think about it.
You're doing exactly what society tells you to do.
GET A JOB!
GET OFF THE STREETS!
GET BACK ON YOUR FEET!
You're trying.
You're doing everything you can.
But everywhere you turn, another door closes.
And all around you, people look at you. Some point fingers. Some judge. Some shake their heads and ask why you won't help yourself.
BUT WHAT IF YOU'VE BEEN TRYING TO HELP YOURSELF ALL ALONG?
What if the people judging you have absolutely no idea what you've been through?
What if they don't understand that the very rules designed to establish your identity can become the barriers preventing you from rebuilding your life?
WHAT IF YOU'RE NOT REFUSING TO MOVE FORWARD?
WHAT IF THE SYSTEM KEEPS BLOCKING YOUR WAY?
And before you say, "Well, I'd figure something out"...
