**UPDATE** For those following along, on 11/6/25 Alton Malabre pulled an un serialized "ghost gun" on officers while fleeing a traffic stop on foot. He was captured after a foot pursuit and the weapon was recovered. The officers were later presented a Meritorious Service Award for their heroic actions. In order to protect the Middletown community and ensure he appeared at court, Middletown Police held Malabre on a $500,000 bond. The following day on 11/7/25 he appeared before Judge Menjivar at G.A. 9 and was released right back into the community on a Promise to Appear despite numerous fi****ms charges. The message sent was loud and clear....don't worry about him pulling guns on police, he's a trustworthy and honest criminal, he'll show up at court and he won't break any other laws, he promised.
Shockingly to absolutely no one except those responsible for his release, on 4/21/26 Malabre cut off his GPS monitor, failed to appear for his scheduled court date, and has absconded back into the community. Now a rearrest warrant has been issued for Malabre with a $500,000 court set bond, which was clearly a good idea in the first place. Because of this our officers must once again locate and arrest this dangerous, gun grabbing criminal. If anyone knows the whereabouts of Alton Malabre please immediately contact Middletown Police at 860 638 4000. WFSB - Channel 3 Eyewitness News NBC Connecticut

Looking good guys! See you at BDL soon.

Life after Law Enforcement! Former MPD Officers Ortiz and Jeffries are both โ€œflying highโ€ in retirement! Off. Ortiz is a flight attendant these days, while Off. Jeffries is at the controls as a pilot! The two were recently assigned the same flight, reuniting them.

We love seeing former officers enjoying the next chapter! Stay safe gentlemen!

On Tuesday Detective Iovene, one of our members, met with Governor Lamont in an effort to find a solution for the Police retention crisis in CT. Himself and other CT law enforcement professionals worked together to help not only our own members, but others working in this great profession throughout the state. Nice work Chris!

It is with profound sorrow and a deep sense of loss that we mourn the passing of our cherished union sibling, Detective Sergeant Daniel โ€œSmittyโ€ Smith, after a battle with cancer.

Sergeant Smith was a devoted law enforcement professional, a proud AFSCME member, a beloved colleague, and a cherished friend. At just 42 years old, Dan was taken from us far too soon, and the community he served with distinction mourns his loss.

Dan dedicated 19 years of his life to the Middletown Police Department, answering the call to public service with courage, compassion, and unwavering integrity. Throughout his career, he distinguished himself not only by his accomplishments but by the way he carried himselfโ€”with humility, kindness, and a genuine commitment to helping others.

From the very beginning of his career, Dan embodied the highest ideals of policing. As a member of the Special Investigations Unit, he worked tirelessly to bring justice and protection to those most vulnerableโ€”victims of domestic violence, child abuse, and sexual assault. These cases demand patience, empathy, and moral strength, and Dan brought all three to every investigation. His dedication to these difficult and sensitive investigations spoke volumes about his character and his belief in the dignity of every person.

Throughout his career, Dan served in multiple roles, including patrol supervisor and fire investigator with the Arson Unit. In each assignment, he earned the trust of his peers through his calm leadership, sound judgment, and willingness to shoulder responsibility without hesitation.

Beyond his badge, Dan was a devoted father to his 9-year-old son and a family man. In this time of sorrow, our hearts are with his loved ones as they endure this terrible loss.

As a union, we stand united in grief and gratitude. We stand shoulder to shoulder in honoring a man who embodied the values we strive to uphold every day. We will remember Dan not only for the badge he wore, but for his character. Dan was more than a detective; he was a mentor and a leaderโ€”someone who made a lasting impact on the lives of his peers and the community. He exemplified the spirit of public service. His watch may have ended, but his impact endures.
