Today is a great to launch the expansion of the Work Zone Speed Camera Program. The evidence speaks for itself The Work Zone Speed Camera program launched as a pilot in 2023. Speed cameras were placed in active work zones — and the results spoke for themselves. Speeding dropped by up to 18%. Drivers going 15 miles per hour or more over the limit — the truly dangerous ones — that number dropped by more than 50%.
It took many years to launch this program, and I am so proud of the state legislature, the DOT and the Governor for supporting the safety of our worker. Connecticut Department of Transportation

"Our contract is an investment in the faculty and staff who keep Connecticut State running and in the students and communities who rely on us. This contract delivers stronger job pathways and clearer workload protections, all of which better serve our students. At a time when too many public services are being stretched thin, approving this agreement is a statement that Connecticut values the people who make public higher education work." - Lisa Calabrese, Membership Officer Congress of Connecticut Community Colleges, SEIU L1973

Shout out to WTIC News/Talk 1080 for championing work zone safety every day, recognizing it's a year-round effort that saves lives. The work zone speed camera program, set to expand to 15 zones this summer, has already shown promising results, reducing speeding by 20% during its pilot phase last year with just three cameras.

On Workers Memorial Day, April 28th we honor workers who have died or suffered illness or injuries on the job.

Our legislative goals continue to move the dial for work zone safety. Advocating for our members safety has to be priority across all sectors. Never be afraid to speak up for your safety and for others it could save a life.

In Connecticut, 41 workers lost their lives to work-related injuries in 2024, the latest data available. An additional 34,600 workers suffered on-the-job injuries or illnesses.

This is unacceptable.

Let us remember the wise words of Mother Jones: 'Pray for the dead and fight like hell for the living."

And that is exactly what we will do.
