Did you know that mixed material items are not recyclable?

For instance, cardboard cannisters are often lined with foil or plastic--this means they belong in the trash.

Contamination is one of the reasons recycling costs money: it takes effort (by humans and machines!) to remove the trash mixed in with the recycling but some contamination slips through the system and reduces the worth of recyclable materials.

We would first recommend reusing any signs.

Any filmy, stretchy yard signs can be brought to the District Transfer station in Middlebury for special recycling with plastic bags and film if it passes the thumb test. If your thumb when pressing against the plastic stretches far without tearing or ripping the sign, it is OK to bring for special recycling. Hard plastic yard signs that are made from corrugated plastic/Coroplast should go in your trash.

AC Units do not belong in the trash or the blue recycling bin.

They contain R-22 Freon and must be handled with care. Instead, repair and reuse or bring them to your local trash transfer station for disposal. Help us spread the word!
