We were honored to join partners at Good Samaritan Haven in Barre as The Vermont Association for Mental Health and Addiction Recovery (VAMHAR) and the Vermont Department of Labor pursued Recovery Friendly Workplace certification—an important step toward expanding recovery-supportive workplaces across Vermont.

An estimated 117,000 Vermonters struggle with substance use (SAMHSA). Recovery-friendly workplaces help ensure that more Vermonters have the support they need to thrive at work and in life.

A big thank you to VAMHAR and the Department of Labor for their leadership and collaboration. As a core partner to VAMHAR, the Vermont Community Foundation is proud to have supported the Recovery Friendly Workplace effort over the past three years and to celebrate this milestone alongside so many dedicated partners.

"Sometimes the solutions to our biggest problems come from our smallest places. And there are some lessons in the ways that we Vermonters show up for each other that a lot of people could stand to learn.”

We were honored to join Retreat Farm, Vermont Public, and over 1,000 community members who gathered for an evening of reflection and conversation marking the 250th anniversary of the founding of the United States.

Thank you to everyone who gathered in Brattleboro to engage with history, wrestle with complexity, and explore what it means to build stronger communities together.

Explore the conversation here:

BRATTLEBORO-On a bright, cool early May evening, more than 1,000 people gathered both under a tent at Brattleboro’s Retreat Farm and peripherally in lawn chairs to hear a panel of four high-powered historians and filmmakers, moderated by scholar Jill Lepore, on the nature and value of the Declarat...

At the heart of strong communities are people who show up for one another with care, trust, and persistence. We’re deeply grateful for partners like Spectrum Youth and Family Services—and for the fundholders and donors whose generosity makes this work possible. Together, they're helping young people navigate challenge, find stability, and build brighter futures.

This powerful story, shared by Spectrum's Executive Director Mark Redmond, is a reminder of what’s possible when young people can access programs and encounter people that offer them consistent support and deep human connection.

Enjoy the videos and music you love, upload original content, and share it all with friends, family, and the world on YouTube.

Balancing college, work, and motherhood, Kallie is building her path toward a nursing career.

Through CCV’s Early College program and Vermont’s Free Degree Promise, she earned her associate degree debt-free and is now continuing her nursing education at Vermont State University.

Back in March, ten brave Vermonters signed up for a Transom live storytelling workshop. Just a couple of days later, they were up on stage, telling their stories to nearly 400 of their neighbors. Now, you can hear their stories for yourself: https://transom.org/2026/being-american/

So many people made this magical event happen: the evening’s hosts, historian and author Jill Lepore and radio personality Tom Bodett. Meg Bowles, Viki Merrick and Sophie Crane who coached these storytellers from scratch in just two days. Retreat Farm and Vermont Public for making us a part of their “America at 250” series, and the The Vermont Community Foundation for supporting it.

When we asked the storytellers why spaces like this matter right now, one said:

“Some days I watch the news and I weep. But sharing reminds us of our common humanity. Small stories that engender hope.”
