Vermont Dance Alliance

Vermont Dance Alliance Vermont Dance Alliance works to enrich the dance culture throughout the state of VT, by supporting dance artists and creating incredible events.

The project began in June, 2016 as a volunteer-run effort to gain insight into what was happening in dance in Vermont. Because of the interests of the participating volunteers, the focus was primarily on contemporary dance. After a year of successful networking, gathering, and producing as a team, the vision expanded to include all dance forms that are represented here in the state. VDA is a 501(c

)(3) nonprofit organization, supported by its membership system, which is comprised of dance artists, service partners, patrons, and sponsors, each of whom play a vital role in our ecosystem. The VDA administration supports dance artists of all genres, educates the public, and brings high quality events to the local community. Vermont Dance Alliance believes that dance is a transformational art form. By providing a network of resources for dance artists and educational opportunities for movers and audiences, we expand the visibility and accessibility of dance in Vermont and bolster the creative economy of the state.

Stories of Spirit and Spirits is an evening-length experimental dance and music production featuring the ten members of the improvisation ensemble, soft rocks: dancers Danielle Tekut, Julian Barnett, Hanna Satterlee, Jessie Owens, Nicole Dagesse, and Beth Morelli, and musicians Matt LaRocca, Jeremy Frederick, Kyle Saulnier, and Will Andrews.

Through music and movement and with the support of structured improvisations, chance methods, costumes, personal mementos, and talismans, they explore myths and archetypes, personal ancestry, shared histories, and experimental social dynamics, as they peer into the bardo and dance with risk in search of a new kind of togetherness. With the pull of a card or the spin of a bottle, each moment will unfold according to chance, creating alternate timelines and outcomes with every performance. They invite you to join them in their seeking. See this performance more than once to experience how chance creates a new turn of events.

This project is supported by a 2025 Vermont Arts Council Creation Grant, and is funded in part by New England Foundation for the Arts’ New England Dance Fund, with generous support from the Aliad Fund at the Boston Foundation. The creation of this project has been generously sponsored by
The First Congregational Church of Burlington.

This weeks Movement Matters Master Class-Nov. 5 4:30-6:00 pm!

The Movement Matters series is a free public program by bringing professional dancers to Middlebury to focus on the significance of movement and its intersectionality across disciplines.

This Wednesdays class by Robbie Cook pulls from various floor work modalities Cook has studied with choreographers from Europe and Latin America who weave the use of the floor into their creative work. His approach is to scaffold the class with passes across the floor that build in complexity and intensity as a means to develop strength, coordination, fluency and personal agency to move in and out of the floor and into inversions safely, and in unexpected ways. Logistically speaking, participants should wear long pants and shirts with sleeves, no tank tops, and possibly wear “dancer knee pads” if they have concerns moving on their knees. All levels of experience are welcome!

Thanks to Middlebury Dance Department for being signature partners for the 2025 year, and for continuing to bring more and more dance to our state!!
