What an incredible second day of wet labs at ! 👁️💙

We hosted four outstanding sessions, including three corneal wet labs led by Drs. Martinez, Cabot, and Koo, and an ocular tumor biopsy dry lab led by Drs. Williams and Di Nicola!

With an amazing turnout, we were proud to share the expertise of Bascom Palmer’s world-class faculty with residents, fellows, and ophthalmologists from around the globe.

As AAO comes to a close today, Beauty of Sight is grateful for the opportunity to advance ophthalmic education and especially thankful to the donors and families whose generous gifts make these hands-on training experiences possible! 💙

American Medical Association Backs Formal Classification of Nearsightedness as a Disease.

The American Medical Association recently passed a resolution backing the formal classification of nearsightedness as a disease, including by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, to ensure children and adolescents have access to appropriate treatments and insurance coverage. The resolution also calls for increased public health education and improved screening in children.

BEAUTY OF SIGHT CONTRIBUTES TO NATIONAL CORNEAL TRANSPLANT STUDY

Should a donor’s history of diabetes affect whether their cornea is used for transplantation? Beauty of Sight was one of 13 U.S. eye banks that provided donor tissue for the Diabetes Endothelial Keratoplasty Study, a multicenter clinical trial designed to investigate that question.

Researchers studied 1,421 eyes undergoing Descemet membrane endothelial keratoplasty (DMEK), a procedure that replaces the cornea’s damaged inner cell layer. Among grafts that were successfully prepared for surgery, the estimated one-year success rate was 97.1% with tissue from donors with diabetes and 96.3% with tissue from donors without diabetes. The difference was not statistically significant. A companion analysis also found no meaningful difference in endothelial cell loss after one year.

The findings support considering appropriately evaluated corneas from donors with diabetes for DMEK. They also show why research matters to eye banking: evidence helps us make informed decisions about donated tissue and honor each gift’s potential to restore sight.

We are proud to have contributed to this study alongside the donors and families who make our work possible.

More than 60 years ago, Bascom Palmer Eye Institute and the Lions of Florida worked together to establish Beauty of Sight as Florida’s first eye bank. Today, that longstanding partnership is helping bring the gift of sight to a new part of the world.

With the support and leadership of the Abu Dhabi Department of Health, the Abu Dhabi Biobank and Bascom Palmer Eye Institute Abu Dhabi are establishing the Middle East’s first eye bank. This landmark initiative will create a reliable local supply of donor corneal tissue, bringing the hope of sight-restoring transplantation closer to patients throughout the region. It will also cultivate local expertise through professional training and advance the future of vision care through ophthalmic research.

Beauty of Sight is proud to contribute its eye banking experience, training, operational guidance, and donor tissue as the program develops. This collaboration demonstrates how sharing knowledge and resources across borders can create lasting improvements in access to sight-restoring care. By sharing our expertise and supporting the expansion of sight-restoring services worldwide, we move closer to fulfilling our mission of Creating a World Without Blindness.
