Beauty of Sight, a 501(c)(3), recovers, processes, stores, and distributes human ocular tissue

Since 1962, Beauty of Sight (formerly Florida Lions Eye Bank) has lived for others, with service dedicated to patients/recipients, ophthalmologists, donor families and the local and international community. It is a non-profit, 501(c)(3) organization and was the very first eye bank established in the State of Florida. Located within the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute, Beauty of Sight is privileged to work with distinguished ophthalmologists in Florida, the United States, and beyond.

More than 60 years ago, Bascom Palmer Eye Institute and the Lions of Florida worked together to establish Beauty of Sight as Florida’s first eye bank. Today, that longstanding partnership is helping bring the gift of sight to a new part of the world.

With the support and leadership of the Abu Dhabi Department of Health, the Abu Dhabi Biobank and Bascom Palmer Eye Institute Abu Dhabi are establishing the Middle East’s first eye bank. This landmark initiative will create a reliable local supply of donor corneal tissue, bringing the hope of sight-restoring transplantation closer to patients throughout the region. It will also cultivate local expertise through professional training and advance the future of vision care through ophthalmic research.

Beauty of Sight is proud to contribute its eye banking experience, training, operational guidance, and donor tissue as the program develops. This collaboration demonstrates how sharing knowledge and resources across borders can create lasting improvements in access to sight-restoring care. By sharing our expertise and supporting the expansion of sight-restoring services worldwide, we move closer to fulfilling our mission of Creating a World Without Blindness.

CHILDREN'S EYE HEALTH AND SAFETY MONTH

Children's Eye Health and Safety Month is a timely reminder to prepare our children for the classroom and for athletics.
During Children's Eye Health and Safety Month, parents should schedule a routine eye exam. Have their eyes fitted with the correct prescription lenses, based on their needs.

Make sure students wear the required protective gear for their classes and athletic activities. Schools provide the proper gear for chemistry, automotive, and other courses, and educators are trained to show students how to use it. Encourage your students to follow the teacher's instructions for their own safety and that of others.

Today, the Beauty of Sight family joins the Lions community in mourning the loss of our Vice President, Past District Governor Bobby Wright.

Bobby joined the Beauty of Sight Board of Directors in 2020 and faithfully served as our Vice President. He was a dedicated advocate for eye donation and our mission of Creating a World Without Blindness, bringing kindness, wisdom, and unwavering support to every Board meeting and every conversation. His warm smile, positive spirit, and servant's heart made him a treasured member of our organization.

A proud member of the Jacksonville R.A.W. Lions Club, Bobby exemplified the Lions motto, "We Serve." His legacy of compassion and service will continue to inspire all of us who had the privilege of knowing and working alongside him.

We extend our heartfelt condolences to Bobby's family, his fellow Lions, and all whose lives he touched. Thank you, PDG Bobby Wright, for your years of service, your friendship, and your commitment to restoring sight and serving others. You will be deeply missed.

BUILDING SKILLS, STRENGTHENING PARTNERSHIPS, AND EXPANDING OUR GLOBAL IMPACT

On July 17, Beauty of Sight partnered with Bascom Palmer Eye Institute and Grupo Mayo to host a hands-on wet lab for 25 ophthalmic surgeons from Spain. Beauty of Sight proudly sponsored the event, providing all ocular tissue and surgical supplies for advanced training in DMEK and DALK.

Guided by faculty members Drs. Jaime Martinez, Guillermo Amescua, and Alfonso Sabater, the surgeons gained practical experience with techniques that can restore sight and transform lives. Marta Marszalek of Grupo Mayo described the program as “an extraordinary experience,” noting that the wet labs were among the most highly valued parts of the course.

Recognizing and Treating Eye Injuries
Take All Eye Injuries Seriously

You can't always tell when an eye is injured. Some injuries are only obvious when they get really serious.

Eye injuries can cause vision loss or blindness. That's why it's important to have an ophthalmologist or other medical doctor examine the eye as soon as possible, even if the injury seems minor at first. DO NOT attempt to treat a serious eye injury yourself.

A visual impairment can make it hard to do everyday activities like driving or reading. A visual impairment can’t be fixed with glasses, contacts, or other standard treatments such as medication or surgery. Millions of people in the United States are living with a visual impairment.

Beauty of Sight honored and welcomed supporters, partners, and community members at its Annual Installation Gala at the DoubleTree by Hilton in Sunrise, Florida.

The evening celebrated the individuals, achievements, and milestones that continue to advance our mission to create a world without blindness. Leadership for both Beauty of Sight and the Beauty of Sight Foundation remains unchanged this year. Joel Levenston, PVDG, continues to serve as President of Beauty of Sight, and Marta Ramirez continues as President of the Beauty of Sight Foundation. Together, they remain dedicated to strengthening the organization’s impact and advancing its life-changing work in the year ahead.

The gala also featured the presentation of two distinguished awards. William Buras, Director of Business Development at Beauty of Sight, received the Ross Carr Award in recognition of his outstanding service and dedication to the organization. The Orange Blossom Lions Club received the Jimmy Nelson Award for its longstanding support, fundraising efforts, and commitment to advancing our mission.

Additionally, Beauty of Sight’s staff and board members were recognized for their dedication, leadership, and contributions over the past year. Their collective efforts continue to drive the success and growth of our vision-saving programs and services.

Evidence Linking Eye Health to Heart Health
A cardiovascular risk score already used routinely in primary care may help identify people at high risk of developing vision-threatening eye diseases later in life, according to researchers at UCLA Health.

The study found that people with higher cardiovascular risk scores were significantly more likely to develop conditions including age-related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, glaucoma, retinal vein occlusion, and hypertensive retinopathy.
