“These are like big, significant waves, and sometimes it's like hitting a concrete wall"

I looked into the dangers Coast Guard boat crews face on the job that's not so obvious. Now, they have launched a new brain health initiative.

This evening, Dr. Gillian Hotz of the KiDZ Neuroscience Center and The Miami Project to Cure Paralysis weighed in with NBC 6's Sheli Muñiz regarding the risk of concussion to US Coast Guard surfmen from repeated wave impacts at sea; "conditions the Coast Guard describes as 'capable of humbling anyone in an instant.'"

New concerns are being raised about Coast Guard members who spend years working in rough waters.

Bicycles are the freedom vehicle for children. They are the next building block – after our own two feet – for exploration, discovery, and wellness 🚲.

This weekend, the LifeTime.Life Foundation and the University of Miami BikeSafe program are celebrating this freedom through a special “bike rodeo” safety and skills event for families in South Florida’s Kendall and Pinecrest neighborhoods.

This one-day-only event will be held at Life Time: Miami at The Falls this Saturday, August 22nd.

This event is free and open to the entire community; a Life Time membership is not required. However, we do ask all participants to please register in advance on Eventbrite:

This is a bring-your-own bicycle event, so make sure your bicycle(s) are in good working order.

See you this Saturday! 🏅

Heads up, Miami-Dade County Public Schools teachers:

This school year, multiple and road safety curricula are available to you - and since they're integrated into the school curriculum every year, it is important to select the right ones for your classroom:

1. For elementary and K-8 teachers, classic WalkSafe remains a staple for grades K-5th. We always recommend implementing it in October in time for Walk to School Day.

2. Also for elementary and K-8: WalkSafe is joined by the addition of the new K-5 BikeSafe Elementary Curriculum (seen in the picture!) for both homeroom and PE.

3. For K-8 and middle school teachers, the BikeSafe Middle School curriculum is, as always, available from our website.

4. Also for K-8 and middle schools teachers: You now have access to an additional virtual offering - ideal for rainy days - in the form of WalkSafe for 6-8th Grades on our Virtual Education Portal. It's all about transportation, so it's really easy to implement, even if you are more familiar with BikeSafe.

Note that if you sign up as an instructor on the Virtual Education Portal with your DadeSchools.net credentials, your students can link their accounts so you can grade their progress.

As always, you can download the curricula and access the Virtual Education Portal from these links:
iwalksafe.org
ibikesafe.org
walkbikesafe.org (Virtual platform)

See you in the classrooms!

Let's give a warm round of congratulations to our latest UConcussion fellow, Caroline DuBois-Weber, who presented her research on concussion incidence and recovery outcomes in female flag football athletes this week at the 8th Annual University of Miami Sports Medicine Institute Research Day and at yesterday's Florida Brain Injury Research Symposium at the McKnight Brain Institute of the University of Florida.

Also sending a shoutout to one of our former UConcussion staff members, Dr. Jonathan Siegel, who was present at the UF event.

Another new WalkSafe & BikeSafe research paper has been published!

This time, Ryan Hellinger, Karan Belday, Dr. Michelina Witte, and Dr. Gillian Hotz bring us the study "Pedestrian and Bicyclist Crashes with Motor Vehicles by the Childhood Opportunity Index;" exploring childhood crash incidence and severity in low SES areas.

The paper is available through the American Academy of Pediatrics Journal at: https://lnkd.in/eD52wPHT
