🟣 Sandra Moore was not notified that Billy Wayne Reid had bonded out of jail. 🟣

On the night she was murdered, Sandra believed he was still in custody. She felt safe because she had no reason to believe otherwise.

I learned this information after seeing Sandra’s profile picture from 2022. Around her photograph are the words, “Break the Silence. End Domestic Violence.” Seeing that image after what happened to Sandra was already a punch to the gut. Knowing now that she didn’t even know Reid had been released makes it that much harder to look at.

The system failed Sandra Moore, just as it has failed countless women before her. How can a victim take steps to protect herself from a danger she doesn’t even know has been released?

We cannot keep asking these questions after another woman is murdered. We cannot keep finding the gaps after someone dies, expressing outrage for a few days, and then moving on until another woman and another grieving family are failed.

Where are our legislators and state leaders? What are we doing to make sure the next Sandra knows when the person accused of hurting or threatening her is released from custody? If there are gaps in Alabama law, fix them. If protections already exist and failed, find out where and fix that too.

Sandra chose those words herself in 2022: “Break the Silence. End Domestic Violence.” Her own story is now a heartbreaking reminder of exactly why those words still need to be heard.

Enough is enough. Something has to change.
