The Virginia Women Attorneys Association has been asked by Senator Scott A. Surovell, chair of the Senate of Virginia Courts of Justice Committee, and Delegate Patrick A. Hope, chair of the House Courts of Justice Committee, to evaluate candidates for four vacancies on the Court of Appeals of Virginia due to legislation passed this session to expand the court.

If you would like to be evaluated by the VWAA, you must respond to a questionnaire by July 31, 2026. Submissions should be sent by email as a Word or PDF document if there are additional documents you would like to provide the committee. Please submit your application materials by email to [email protected]. Interviews will be conducted by the individual committee members.

Lex Claudia: The Roman Law that Abolished the Ancient Guardianship of Adult Women by their Male Relatives

Lex Claudia is the scholarly publication of VWAA and is published from time to time. The magazine is distributed free to all current VWAA members, all Virginia Judges, all members of the Virginia General Assembly and all accredited law schools and law libraries.

Lex Claudia honors abolition of guardianships of adult women in ancient Roman law that rendered them property of their male relatives. It has been the official scholarly journal of the Virginia Women Attorneys Association since June, 1981. The journal is distributed free to VWAA members and Virginia judges, members of the General Assembly, law schools, and law libraries.

Our VWAA Hampton Roads Chapter hosted a lovely luncheon at Yorgo's in Norfolk on May 21st. Special Guest was the Hon. Elizabeth W. Haynes who is a U.S. District Judge for the Eastern District.
A good time was had by all!
