Today, we celebrate the strength, cultures, and traditions that make Indigenous communities vibrant and resilient. On Indigenous Peoples' Day, we also recognize the impact of diabetes on Indigenous people and the importance of access to quality, culturally responsive care and resources. A WIN FOR DIABETES ACCESS IN HAWAIʻI!

The American Diabetes Association® celebrates the enactment of SB 3045, an important step toward expanding access to continuous glucose monitors (CGMs) for people living with diabetes across Hawai‘i.

The new law requires health insurance plans, including Medicaid managed care plans, to provide coverage for CGMs—helping more people access technology that provides real-time glucose information and supports better diabetes management.

Research consistently demonstrates that CGMs improve glycemic management, reduce episodes of hypoglycemia, and support earlier clinical intervention for people living with diabetes.

This achievement reflects the collective efforts of community partners, healthcare professionals, advocates, organizations, lawmakers, and individuals. This progress is especially meaningful for our rural island communities facing barriers related to geography, cost, and specialty care, helping more people access essential diabetes technology and support.

Mahalo to Governor Josh Green for signing SB 3045 in to law, and to our state legislators, advocates, healthcare professionals, and community members who helped move this important policy forward.

We were proud to be part of the Hawaiian Counsil’s 2026 Native Hawaiian Convention. In partnership with community partners we organized, “For the Health of Our ʻOhana: Understanding Diabetes & Clinical Research in NHPI Communities,” a workshop focused on diabetes, prevention, and the importance of Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander representation in clinical research.

The session created space for a conversation about how diabetes impacts our ʻohana and communities, why education and early prevention matters, and how greater inclusion of NHPI voices in clinical research can help shape treatments and solutions that better reflect the people they are intended to serve.

Mahalo to the Hawaiian Counsil, Eli Lilly, our presenters, and everyone who joined the conversation. Advancing health across our communities requires more than awareness, it requires representation, access, trusted partnerships, and ensuring our communities have a voice in the research and decisions that affect our health.

A heartfelt mahalo to Kyo-ya Hotels & Resorts for their incredible generosity and commitment to the American Diabetes Association’s mission here in Hawaiʻi! 💙

Through their Mai Tais & Burgers to Mālama campaign, five Kyo-ya properties across Hawaiʻi came together to raise more than $22,000 to support the fight against diabetes and improve the lives of people and families impacted by diabetes here in Hawai‘i.

This partnership is a wonderful example of what can happen when local businesses, employees, and our community rally around a shared purpose. Every Mai Tai enjoyed, every burger ordered, and every dollar raised helps the ADA continue our work to expand access to resources, education, advocacy, and programs for people living with diabetes across Hawaiʻi.

We are deeply grateful to the entire Kyo-ya Hotels & Resorts ʻohana, their participating properties, team members, and everyone who supported the campaign. Your generosity is making a meaningful difference in the health and well-being of our community.

Mahalo nui loa for standing with us in the fight to end diabetes!
