Can 0.2% of your brain control how you sleep?

SRI’s Thomas Kilduff is a co-author on a new paper in Nature, led by Renata Batista-Brito of the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. The study identifies Sst-Chodl neurons, which make up just 0.2% of cortical neurons, as active promoters of sleep.

Kilduff first proposed that these cells may sense sleep pressure, the need for sleep that builds the longer we stay awake.

A buyer wants to know where their coffee beans were grown. A sustainability assessor walks the rows. A lender and an insurer arrive with questions of their own. Each collecting information and moving on.

SRI spin-out Wingsure introduced a platform called COFFEA that captures evidence on the farm, verifies it, and packages it into what the company calls decision-grade intelligence for the coffee industry.

We're working on bringing medical care to rural communities through an AI-powered “co-pilot” for clinicians.

A Thomson Reuters report details how SRI is using a $26.5 million award from the Advanced Research Projects Agency for Health (ARPA-H) to develop the system, which uses cameras, voice recognition, and real-time prompts to guide nurses, nurse practitioners, and general clinicians through procedures that would typically require a specialist, including blood draws, basic ultrasounds, splinting, lab tests, and intubation.
