We select passionate and dedicated volunteers who, on average, consistently support the same teacher for four school years.

Ravenswood Classroom Partners' trained volunteers tutor elementary school students in East Palo Alto and east Menlo Park to help them improve their academic performance. Ravenswood Classroom Partners supports young elementary school students by placing tutors in their classrooms every week, all school year, at no cost to the school district. During the 2020-21 pandemic school year, we offered our tutoring programs online, supporting students while they were in distance learning. We are back in person for the 2021-22 school year.

October 8 is National DAF Day! If you have a Donor-Advised Fund, it’s a great day to make a gift. What a joy to be back in the classroom! There is truly nothing quite like the magic of seeing our wonderful volunteers meeting with their learners week after week. Those eager smiles, the quiet focus over a new book or sound, and the powerful bonds of trust and mentorship being built right now are at the very heart of what we do.

Volunteer Training Gets Our Tutors Ready for the Year -- Last week, the Ravenswood School district trained our volunteers to use the same literacy curriculum that the teachers are using. Tutors will focus on letter sounds, decoding words with phonics and high frequency words with our younger learners while working on reading fluency and comprehension with the older students. Our volunteers have on-going opportunities for training so they feel ready to tutor!

Meet & Greets to Start the Year of Tutoring -- Recently, RCP tutors had a chance to meet their teachers at Costaño School and Belle Haven School and lay out plans for tutoring students later this month. Our Site Directors Alison Chao, Lori McKinney, Cristiana Freed and Lorna Dunne led their meet & greets together with our Program Director Susan MacLeod and Executive Director Angie Holman. Volunteers appreciated the time to look over materials, find their classrooms and discuss plans with their teachers. And the teachers are excited to start a new year with dedicated volunteers supporting their students with individualized lessons.

Tell A Friend - Reading Tutors Needed
With the sudden closure of The Primary School, the Ravenswood district is welcoming more than 100 new students and we need more reading tutors. Working with the kids is both fun and rewarding! It’s an hour a week, during the school day, grades TK-5, with the same small group of kids. No experience is necessary since we provide training and support throughout the year. As a close partner with the Ravenswood City School District , we have seen up close the transformation of the schools. We’ve been tutoring on campuses during construction and when each project is complete, it is an amazing new environment. We are proud to be a part of such a vibrant community. We are proud to be a grantee of the Atkinson Foundation which strives to improve the lives of people in San Mateo County. They support community-based and community-led smaller nonprofits focused in several areas including education. Our volunteer Leadership Team is unique! They take on so many jobs in coordination with our Executive Director and Program Director: volunteer support, marketing, communications, events and so much more. Our Board ensures smooth functioning of administrative needs so our staff can focus on implementing great programs in partnership with the school district.

This week we celebrated our volunteers as well as the Ravenswood teachers and staff at an appreciation event. Thank you everyone for an amazing year working together as a big team to boost the academic skills and confidence of the Ravenswood students! You all made a real difference!
