Halloween should be spooky for people—not our pets. 🎃🐾

Ringing doorbells, unfamiliar costumes, and a steady stream of trick-or-treaters can feel overwhelming to dogs and cats. A little preparation can help them enjoy a calmer evening:

🐾 Set up a quiet, comfortable room away from the front door with their favorite bed, water, and familiar toys.
🎶 Play soft music to help soften the sounds of visitors.
🚪 Keep pets safely separated from the doorway so they can’t slip outside.
🍬 Keep candy and wrappers out of reach.
💛 Let pets skip the greetings and costumes if they seem uncomfortable.

At Project HumaneKind, we believe kindness includes noticing when animals need a little space. Sometimes the best Halloween treat is a peaceful place to curl up.

Keep Halloween spooky—and kind to wildlife! 🎃🦇

As you decorate, remember the animals who share our neighborhoods. Stretchy fake spiderwebs can entangle birds, bats, and other wildlife, while dangling loops, cords, and decorations with small openings can trap heads or legs.

🍂 Keep artificial webs indoors.
🍂 Avoid loose loops and hanging strings outside.
🍂 Keep decorations away from trees, shrubs, and animal pathways.
🍂 Choose pumpkins and sturdy decorations without loose fibers or dangling parts.

If you find an animal tangled in decorations, contact a local wildlife rehabilitator for guidance.

A little thoughtfulness can make Halloween safer for all our neighbors. 🧡

The calendar says fall. Our animals are still feeling summer. ☀️🐾

During this heat wave, kindness can look like a shorter walk, a freshly filled water bowl, or a cool indoor spot beside you. Check on outdoor water dishes, too—a little shade and fresh water can offer wildlife a welcome break.

They can’t change the forecast, but we can make their day more comfortable. 💚

The heat is back this week, and our pets need a little extra care. ☀️🐾

Plan walks for the cooler parts of the day, check pavement before heading out, and make sure animals have plenty of fresh water and a cool place to rest. If your pet is panting heavily, drooling, or acting weak or confused, get them somewhere cool and call a veterinarian right away.

A few small changes to the daily routine can make a big difference. 💛

A parked car can become dangerous for an animal in minutes. 🐾 Never leave a pet inside, even for a quick errand.

See an animal in distress? Call 911. In California, a person may take reasonable steps to rescue an animal in immediate danger, but must contact emergency services before forcing entry and follow the law’s other requirements. 🚗💛

🐾 Kindness can be simple.

A bowl of fresh water. A gentle hand. A safe place to rest. Taking a moment to notice an animal who may need help.

Every act of compassion—big or small—helps create a kinder world for animals and the people who care for them. 💛

With temperatures climbing across the Central Coast, don’t forget about our smaller furry friends! ☀️🐰 Rabbits are especially sensitive to heat and can begin to struggle when temperatures rise above 77°F.

Keep them cool with plenty of fresh water, shade, good airflow and cool surfaces to relax on — and always watch closely for signs of overheating.

A little extra care can make a big difference on a hot day. 💚

☀️ HEAT ADVISORY: Keep Pets Safe 🐾

It’s going to be HOT on the Central Coast! As temperatures climb, remember that our animals feel the heat, too.

💧 Keep plenty of fresh, cool water available.
🌳 Make sure pets have access to shade and a cool indoor space.
🐕 Walk dogs early in the morning or later in the evening — hot pavement can burn sensitive paws.
🚗 NEVER leave a pet in a parked car, even for a few minutes.
🥵 Watch for signs of overheating, including excessive panting, drooling, weakness, difficulty breathing or collapse.

Older pets, overweight animals and flat-faced breeds can be especially vulnerable to extreme heat.

A few simple precautions can make all the difference. Keep yourself — and every member of your family — cool and safe! ❤️🐶🐱
