Temperatures are expected to reach 90° today in Memphis as hundreds of thousands of residents are without power. Meanwhile, gas generators and power lines continue to surge electricity into data centers with no interruption to services. Our system is once again showing what it works for: profit over people.

I'm proud to co-sponsor an ordinance the Memphis City Council will vote on tomorrow to put a moratorium on new data center development.

When xAI came to Memphis, I found out on the news the same way our community did. Since then, I've helped push for policies to better protect our water and air, and to dedicate tax revenues from xAI to the communities surrounding these data centers.

But we have more work to do, and we need to put regulations into place before another data center is built in Memphis—or anywhere in our state. We should not allow billion-dollar tech companies to move faster than the laws designed to protect Tennessee communities.

Each September, the Southern Heritage Classic transforms Memphis into one of the nation’s largest HBCU homecoming celebrations, drawing tens of thousands of alumni, students, families, and fans from across the Mid-South for a weekend where culture, competition, and community take center stage. Hosted by Memphis for All, the Alpha Memphis Education Foundation, and the Greater Memphis Alumni Chapters of Alcorn State University and the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff, this is where HBCU excellence, great music, fellowship, and Memphis culture come together under one roof.

More than an after-party, Power After the Classic is a fresh take on what community celebration can look like—bringing together HBCU alumni, professionals, business leaders, and neighbors in a fun, welcoming, and strictly nonpartisan environment that also makes civic engagement easy and accessible. Tennessee residents can simply verify their voter registration or learn their voting district upon entry, while out-of-state guests are admitted free with no verification required.
