STORIES BEHIND THE SCHOLARSHIP 📖🎓:

For over twenty-five years, Sweet’s Stuff was more than just a sports card, candy, and collectibles store in Melrose; it was a local landmark where Nancy Sweet greeted every child by name and remembered exactly which penny candy they loved most. Today, her legacy of kindness and community connection lives on through the Nancy “Sweet’s Stuff” Memorial Scholarship that we are proud to honor today.

Nancy showed us what everyday kindness looks like, and this scholarship reflects the heart she shared with so many. It recognizes a student who carries that same light —someone who demonstrates kindness by going above and beyond to help those in need, who is active in Melrose community activities, and who has shown perseverance in the face of adversity. And perhaps they enjoy eating candy too. 🍬

📚 STORIES BEHIND THE SCHOLARSHIP 🎓

The Ann P. (Kiernan) Norton Memorial Scholarship was established in loving memory of Ann Norton. Ann was a devoted nurse, wife, mother, and cherished member of the community whose compassion and generosity touched countless lives.

Ann was born on January 5, 1962, in Boston, Massachusetts, and was raised in Melrose in a close-knit Irish Catholic family as one of six siblings. She attended St. Mary’s Grammar School and graduated from Melrose High School, Class of 1980. She went on to earn her nursing degree from Lasell Junior College, beginning what would become a remarkable 30-year career as a registered nurse primarily in the ICU at Melrose Wakefield Hospital.

Ann lived a life grounded in service, faith, and selflessness. She was widely known as an exceptional nurse, often described as an “earth angel” by patients and colleagues alike. Her intelligence, kindness, and unwavering compassion defined her work.

Beyond her career, Ann was a loving wife, mother, daughter, sister, aunt, and friend who always prioritized family. She especially cherished time with her children. She proudly attended their various sporting events and generously volunteered within the community.

Ann passed away on April 15, 2013 after battling with colon cancer. Though her life was cut short, her impact continues to be felt by all who knew her.

Her legacy of compassion, generosity, and service continues through this scholarship.
The award is presented annually to a graduating senior from Melrose High School who plans to pursue a degree in nursing and exemplifies the caring spirit Ann embodied throughout her life.
