In 2004, OBAT started serving an unfortunate and forgotten group of people, commonly known as Bihari or Urdu Speaking (formerly known as stranded Pakistanis).

OBAT Helpers is a U.S.-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit empowering marginalized and displaced communities in Bangladesh through education, healthcare, WASH, livelihoods, youth development, and emergency relief. OBAT Helpers is a US based 501(C) (3), non-profit organization committed to providing aid, support, education, and economic empowerment to displaced, stranded and refugee populations residing in camps in Bangladesh. Over 300,000 of them are living in 116 makeshift camps in 13 different cities throughout Bangladesh since 1971. More than three generations of this community continue to live in 8 ft. x 10 ft. spaces in abject poverty, with no access to basic amenities. They face a severe lack of education, healthcare and income earning opportunities. OBAT Helpers has been instrumental in providing opportunities for growth and transformation to this community through the areas of education, health, infrastructure development, empowerment and relief. Since September 2017, OBAT has also been in the forefront of serving Rohingya refugees after the crises erupted in August 2017. The Rohingya escaped from persecution and genocide in Myanmar to seek protection in Bangladesh. With the crisis unfolding at the doorstep of OBAT’s projects, the organization made a strategic decision to provide humanitarian assistance in the immediate aftermath and apply solutions and lessons learned from the Urdu-speaking camps to help the recently displaced individuals. OBAT’s current relief strategy in the Rohingya camps addresses the medical, educational, nutritional and emergency needs of the refugees. OBAT also provides empowerment opportunities to Rohingya women by training them to sew. Since 2004...

· Approx. 150,000 people have benefited from OBAT's clean water and sanitation projects

· 604,895 people have been aided by OBAT's family assistance and qurbani programs

22 years. Because of you. 💚

This season, OBAT Helpers marks 22 years of serving the stranded Pakistani community in Bangladesh. When we look back, we don't only see schools, clinics and water pumps. We see the people who made them possible.

The donor who gave every Ramadan, without fail.
The volunteer who gave up weekends to pack food and blankets.
The teacher who kept believing in her students.
The friend who shared our posts so one more person would know.

Building skills. Building futures. 🧵

Recently, the OBAT Sewing Training Center held a discussion and evaluation meeting, bringing together our students and their parents and guardians to reflect on the students' progress and shape what comes next.

The meeting was led by Project Officer Mr. Humayun Kabir, alongside Monitoring Officer Sharjil Jilani, Head Teacher Nawshin Zeba, Sewing Instructor Rozina, and Pre-In-Charge Mosarrat Khatun Nipa. Every student of the center and their families took part.

Mr. Kabir spoke with the students directly, asking about their learning progress, their training experiences, and their needs. He examined the garments they had made and praised their growing skill and confidence. Together, everyone discussed the needs and challenges of the center, and put forward valuable ideas to make the training even more effective for the students.

Skill development is never only about learning a profession. It builds confidence, independence, and the opportunity for a better future. And for these women, it is a path to a life they can shape on their own terms.

That is OBAT's goal: to empower women through skills development, and to support them in building a more secure and self-reliant future.

A proud day for OBAT Lower Secondary School. 📚

Today, students from Grades 6 to 10 across Bangladesh took part in the nationwide Ispahani Mirzapore Banglabid Competition, an initiative built to make the proper use of the Bengali language, correct spelling, accurate pronunciation, and the practice of Bengali literature more popular and meaningful for the younger generation.

We are proud to share that 22 students from OBAT Lower Secondary School enthusiastically joined the competition. At the Khulna District round, held at Khulna Zilla School, our students had the chance to test their knowledge and abilities alongside students from many other schools.

Throughout the day, they were supervised and guided by Senior Teacher Mr. Nasim Ahmed and Khan Academy Class Teacher Ms. Monira Islam.

Competitions like this do so much more than measure knowledge. They build a healthy competitive spirit, nurture a love for language and culture, and spark a lasting interest in literature.

We extend our heartfelt best wishes to all 22 of our participating students. Watching them grow in confidence and curiosity is exactly why we do this work.

A short history most of us were never taught.

When borders were redrawn decades ago, one community was left on the wrong side of them, not fully claimed by anywhere. A people caught between countries that each considered them someone else's responsibility.

Their grandchildren are still living in camps that were only ever meant to be temporary. No passport. No land. Limited legal work. An entire life built inside the boundaries of a place that was never supposed to be permanent.

They are part of our ummah. They share our faith, our values, our sense of what we owe one another. And for decades, they have been waiting for the rest of us to notice.

At OBAT Helpers, we have spent 22 years standing beside this community, building the schools, clinics, and support that make a different future possible for their children.
