❤️February is American Heart Month!❤️

This month we focus on protecting our most vital muscle, the heart, and understanding how lifestyle habits like to***co use affect cardiovascular health.

đź’ˇHeart Disease in the U.S.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), heart disease is a leading cause of death in the United States, with hundreds of thousands of Americans affected by heart attacks and cardiovascular conditions each year.

🚬Ni****ne & To***co Use Impact Your Heart:
• According to the American Heart Association ni****ne is a highly addictive chemical that can increase heart rate and blood pressure, and narrow arteries. All of which increase the risk of heart disease and heart attack.
• The CDC reports that smoking is a major cause of cardiovascular disease and is responsible for an estimated 1 in every 4 deaths from heart disease. Smoking also contributes to plaque buildup and artery narrowing, increasing the risk of coronary heart disease, stroke, and other serious conditions.
• Research published by the American College of Cardiology links e-cigarette (va**ng) use, which delivers ni****ne, to a higher risk of heart failure. Showing that people who use e-ci******es were significantly more likely to develop this serious cardiovascular condition than those who had never used them.
• Newer ni****ne products, like smokeless oral ni****ne pouches, also carry adverse effects on cardiovascular biomarkers, meaning they may still pose heart health risks even without combustion smoke.

đź’—What This Means for You:
Ni****ne isn’t just addictive; it also strains the heart and blood vessels, increasing the risk for heart disease, stroke and related health problems.

🫀This American Heart Month, take a moment to think about your heart, and if you use to***co or ni****ne products think about the benefits of quitting. Your heart will thank you! ❤️

📅 January is Substance Use Disorder Treatment Month 🎗️

According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), Substance Use Disorder (SUD) Treatment Month is observed each January to raise awareness about effective treatment options, reduce stigma, and support individuals and families on the path to recovery. This campaign highlights that treatment works and recovery is possible.

🧠 What SUD looks like in the U.S.?
According to data from SAMHSA’s National Survey on Drug Use and Health, 48.4 million people aged 12 or older (about 16.8% of the population) had a substance use disorder in the past year, affecting millions of individuals, families and communities.

🚬 Why ni****ne use matters in SUD Treatment?
• Research shows that people receiving treatment for SUDs have high rates of ni****ne use, with nearly half of adults in SUD treatment reporting ni****ne use. In some populations, ni****ne use in treatment settings can exceed 60%, especially among those with opioid use disorders.
• Additionally, about three-quarters of individuals in SUD treatment programs smoked ci******es, highlighting how common ni****ne use is among people seeking help for other addictions.

đź’Ş To***co cessation can support overall recovery
According to analysis from the Population Assessment of To***co and Health Study, individuals who transitioned from current to former cigarette smoking had greater odds of sustained recovery from other substance use disorders, showing that addressing ni****ne use can support long-term recovery. This SUD Treatment Month, let’s celebrate the strength it takes to seek help, including integrating to***co cessation support as part of comprehensive treatment. Every step toward health matters, and recovery from SUD, including ni****ne use.

📢 New State Report: Most States Are Shortchanging To***co Prevention 📢

Despite states collecting billions each year from to***co settlements and taxes, most are still NOT investing enough in programs that help kids stay to***co-free and support people who want to quit. 👶🚭

📊 According to the latest Broken Promises to Our Children report from the Campaign for To***co-Free Kids:
• States will collect over $21 billion this year, yet only a small fraction (3.4%) is spent on prevention and cessation.
• Only one state (Maine) meets CDC-recommended funding levels.
• To***co companies outspend states nearly 12 to 1 in marketing their deadly products.
• To***co use remains a leading cause of preventable deaths in the U.S. and continues to impact millions.

👉 We KNOW what works to protect our kids and communities: evidence-based prevention, higher to***co taxes, and strong cessation support. It’s time for states to step up! 💪

🌸August is National Breastfeeding Month!🌸

Breastfeeding offers incredible benefits—but smoking while nursing can introduce risks to your baby and affect your milk supply. Here’s what research from WIC and CDC shows:

• Smoking can reduce milk supply and change its quality.
• Ni****ne and toxins pass into breast milk at higher levels than through the placenta.
• Ni****ne levels in breast milk of smoking mothers are nearly three times higher than in their blood plasma.
• Infants breastfed by smoking mothers are exposed to measurable ni****ne and its metabolites. Ni****ne metabolites like cotinine have been detected in the urine and blood of breastfed infants directly proportional to how much the mother smokes.
• Secondhand smoke and toxins harm baby’s health. To***co and e-cigarette use while breastfeeding can transmit harmful chemicals via breast milk or secondhand exposure and increases the risks of SIDS, respiratory issues, and ear infections.
• Heavier smoking is linked to poorer infant growth. One study suggests infants breastfed by mothers who smoke more than 10 ci******es a day showed concerning growth trajectories.

đź’ˇThe good news?
Breastfeeding remains beneficial even if you smoke. Quitting to***co can lower risks, improve milk supply, and support your baby’s health.
