It's the prime time to get your gardens planted, so why not brush up on your native plant knowledge?

Join us next Tuesday, June 2 at 6pm for our next Book Club meeting! We'll meet at the Monarch Research Station to share thoughts and favorite tips from the book Plant This, Not That, by Elise Howard.

These days, home gardeners know that many traditional, non-native garden plants—like English ivy, barberry, and burning bush—don't support our bees, butterflies, birds, and other creatures. Plant This, Not That considers some of the most common non-native (and often, invasive) plants in North American gardens and suggests substitutions for more beneficial and equally beautiful natives.

Spring is here, and your trees are ready for a little mulch love! Just remember: when it comes to mulching, think donut, not volcano.

A proper mulch ring should look like a donut around the base of the tree (2-4 inches deep), leaving a little breathing room around the trunk. Piling mulch up against the trunk can trap moisture, invite pests, and cause rot. So give your tree some space to shine — no mulch volcanoes, please!

Reminder: Our Book Club meets tomorrow, May 5 at 6 PM at the Monarch Research Station!

This month, we’re diving into Junglekeeper: What It Takes to Change the World by Paul Rosolie — a powerful memoir of courage, conservation, and deep connection to the Amazon. It’s part adventure, part heartfelt tribute to the wild places and people fighting to protect them.

Whether you’ve finished the book, just started, or haven’t cracked it open yet — please join us! Come share your thoughts, listen, and connect with fellow readers.

Bring a friend (or two!) and join us for a meaningful, relaxed evening. We’d love to see you there!
