I used to think "order my steps" meant God handing me a to-do list every morning. Step one, step two, step three. Proverbs 16:9 says something different. We plan our course, but he establishes the steps.
This week The Lion Within, a YouVersion devotional, reframed submission for me. Not weakness. Not losing your voice. It is surrendering because you trust completely, the same way a horse trusts the owner who has always led it somewhere safe. That distinction matters, especially for anyone who has been told that submission means silence.
I needed that reframe because I had just watched a documentary about a pastor I strongly suspect harmed his wife. He twisted the word submission into permission to do whatever he wanted, and called it holy. It disturbed me. Real submission was never about someone controlling you. It is about trust, and trust has to be earned.
Looking back at my own life, I see God establishing steps I never planned. I pictured myself raising my son in Woodstock. Instead I am in Dunwoody, somewhere my mother always wanted for me and somewhere I did not want for myself at the time. I had a dream of building a business with my brother. It has not happened the way I imagined, and I still believe God has something in that space. I do not always like how the redirection feels in the moment, but he has not been wrong yet.
I am still working on my judgment. I am still working on bringing him my plans before I build them out in my head. But I am surrendered.
Have you actually surrendered your plans to God, or have you just said the words?

Some mornings that is the first thing I do. Other days it comes back around before the day is over. In my head, that phrase had one meaning....
